Diagnostics Port

Hello. I have a j-spec tt6 and it has the red '!' in the middle of the dash, it also flashes the slip control light after a quick drive and doesn't stop flashing (On/off button doesn't do anything once it starts flashing). I tried the paperclip in the TE - TE1 ports and turned the ignition on and nothing changed at all?? Anyone have any ideas?

Assuming you can find it, you can disconnect the DSC as you aid and see if it makes a difference. I would strongly suggest trying again to get the error codes from the ECU: do you know what you're looking for? The engine warning light should blink in a pattern to indicate the error code(s). If no codes are stored, it'll come on constantly without blinking. No light at all means you've got a blown bulb or something.

The engine warning light stays on constantly as though there's no fault but, The '!' in the middle of the dash is always on (I think its because the front spoiler has been removed) and the slip control off light flashes when im driving. Would that not come up as a fault code?

To clarify, is the underlined bit true when the car is in diagnostics mode (i.e. you've bridged the 2 pins on the diagnostics port to read the error codes)?

If so, it's very strange. I would expect anything that causes the "!" light to come on would also cause an error code to be logged.

Is your brake fluid topped up? That can cause the warning light to come on if it's low.

I've never had an active spoiler so I can't advise you on that.

Yea, that is all true and brake fluid is topped up. It had brand new brakes when I bought it, maybe they've knocked a sensor out or something? I'm pretty sure they've done something to the rear abs sensor thats causing the slip control off button to flash...? Shall I try disconnecting the speed convertor? (Would that be near the ECU?)

The speed sensor should be OK, although of course the fault could potentially lie anywhere in any of the car's systems. Aftermarket speed convertors fitted to JSpec cars sometimes give up, but they usually cause a "code 42" error to be logged with the ECU.

My best guess is that you've got 2 problems:

1) whatever causes the "!" to come on in the first place;

2) something is stopping the warning light from telling you what the error codes are: this is very unusual, assuming you're sure you've bridged the right pins on the diagnostics port. Sometimes people can't read the error codes if the bulb's blown or been removed, but we've ruled that out.

I'm stumped with (2), but here's my thoughts on (1): When the "!" light comes on, does the car behave any differently in the way it drives or handles? Does it stay on until you turn off the engine? Does it come back on if you re-start the engine immediately? Is there any particular speed that the "!" comes on at?

It won't be a faulty speed convertor then. By "spolier ECU", I *think* people might mean the spoiler fuse, but I'm not sure.

The spoiler does seem the most likely candidate at the moment. Regarding not being able to get error codes from the ECU, have you tried bridging the contacts on the other diagnostics port in the driver's footwell? (I assume you've been using the one in the engine bay)

I've only tried the e1 and te1 in the engine bay. I shall try in the foot well

Good idea.

...and ill try other contacts on the engine bay plug...

Maybe not such a good idea, unless you know what you're doing. Testing for voltages will be harmless, but won't tell you anytihng unless you know what voltage to expect and when.

Ha Ha. Funniest thing ever. I didnt realise the hand brake made the ! stay on. Thats why I didnt think taking the spoiler Ecu out did stop the ! . Just the slip control light flashing now to sort out. think that is a loose wire to the abs sensor on the rear drivers side

Doh :D

The slip control flash can be caused by a lot of things, however there is a way to diagnose an ABS error since they are stored in a similar way to engine error codes - have a search in tech here and it should turn up a thread about it. The ABS system will record an error code if the ABS sensor is at fault.
