Dave_SZ-R
Hi chaps, Think I might have a seized rear caliper, although the symptoms dont match exactly with anything I could find using the search button. Basically get a metallic grinding (shhhhhshhhhshhh) whilst driving, the pitch of the noise increasing with speed, and going away whilst braking. I could make it go away for a while by quickly stamping the brake, but now its constant (unless Im braking). No 'handbrake on' sensation, possible increased fuel economy, although that could be my imagination. Any ideas?
vvteye
Take the wheel off then undo the two bolts holding the caliper on. Get a mate to press the brake and watch the pots go in. If they don't then it's seized, usually caused by water getting through the seal and corroding the piston. So then buy another and replace. I'm no mechy techy but refurbing the brakes recently with a kit from Paul whifbitz was one of the easier jobs to do.
Dave
just done this on mine last nite came home and the caliper was red hot it was one of the pins on the slider that was stuck its a pretty easy job i took one pad out the piston side one. put a screwdriver where the pad was and pressed the brake then levered it back in lifted the rubber seal and sprayed wd40 in did the pedal a few more times and the piston was moving easy .then i took out both pins sprayed engine degreaser in the holes stuck a cloth on a thin screwdriver and cleaned em out rubbed down both the pins and regreased with cv grease now there both free and slide easy .you can leave off the anti rattle rubber on the end of one of the pins i doubt it will rattle anyways
Digsy
Are you sure your pads aren't just getting thin? What you've described sounds like the noisemakers in the pad contacting the disc to let you know they are getting worn. As mentioned above, if your caliper is siezed then it will be very hot after a run.
