Science ponders 'zombie attack'

Apparently Scientists in Canada are modelling what would actually happen in the event of a Zombie attack. I have to say I've pondered this quite a bit myself :D

Linky

My understanding of zombie biology is that if you manage to decapitate a zombie then it's dead forever

Check out the other Professors name too... very weird stuff going on here.

Professor Robert Smith? (the question mark is part of his surname and not a typographical mistake) and colleagues wrote: "We model a zombie attack using biological assumptions based on popular zombie movies. "We introduce a basic model for zombie infection and illustrate the outcome with numerical solutions."

On his university web page, the mathematics professor at Ottawa University says the question mark distinguishes him from Robert Smith, lead singer of rock band The Cure.

Apparently capturing the Zombies would just put off the inevitable. I think a good head shot could be the way forward. I would also like to see groups of them rounded up for 'sport kills' a la' Left4Dead :D

Another silly story making scientists look like fools. Read this thread.

I think the serious point was that they're using 'popular fiction' to aid modelling of what would happen if a highly infectious disease were to break out - probably off the back of the swine flu thing.

I just thought it was amusing :) and I'm a bit of a Zombie fan.

- the Robert Smith guy with the question mark... err... I'm sure he is academically brilliant, but it's probably not doing his reputation any favours.

Mike, the likes of you and I may not be taken in by articles of this nature, but there are plenty of dimwits out there waiting for stuff like this to add to their prejudice that scientists are Frankenstein-like boffins up to no good in their secret laboratories, 'meddling with things they don't understand' and being a danger to society. Stuff like that really gets on my tits.

And I only had 4 hours sleep last night so I am grumpy.

This has turned into the Left4Dead thread :)

I only got it last week, so I've done the airport one and 'another' one with my mates... we usually do vs. but I think I prefer a good campaign :D

I'll be on about 9 tonight I think..

Anyone else having a piece of this? :eyebrows:

Ok I will free myself up for 9, Now back to the science.... I believe we all need to watch 28days later to get a better understanding of what could happen if swine flu mated with bird flu which was bred with dog flu mixed with a tickly back throat.

Mike,

Have you read World War Z yet? It's the aftermath of a zombie holocaust told by the survivors. It details how they coped, how news broke out, how they eventually turned the tide and then onto rebuilding humanity.

It's one of my favourite books of recent times. A movie is being made of it but read the book first.

As a scientist myself, this kind of thing pisses me off...
