halllon
Hello guys, My V161 gearbox is scraping when shifting to 3rd gear from 2nd. As this is a race car RPMs tend to be fairly high when shifting occurs. It seems to us the gear synchronization is gone/worn out, and the result is that you have to force the shifter to engage. 1. Exactly which parts are needed to do the synchro rebuild? I am very interested in getting the part numbers needed for the repair to check availability with my local Toyota dealer and eventually dealers on this site. 2. How hard is it for a trained transmission technician to perform the rebuild? We are in quite a hurry with a tight race schedule and we do not have a replacement gearbox at this time, so we we pretty much have to have the box serviced successfully when first opening it. All help appreciated! We have had a thoruogh look through this thread without actually getting somewhere: http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85965&page=3 Note: We have been running Castrol SMX oil in this box as this is what Toyota recommended for us. I know there is a lot of controversy around V160/161s and oil but please don't drag this into this tread. We are trying to source V160 or Toyota Type IV gearbox fluid. Paul Whiffin
I have V160 gearbox oil in stock always. As for the parts you need, I can get them from Japan which should save you a bit over Euro prices. Would need part numbers though to give to my supplier, think you need to get that box apart ASAP. halllon
Cheers Paul, how fast is shipping of V160 oil to Norway? We have an event this weekend as well as an event next weekend... I am a little worried that if we open the box tomorrow we might not be able to put it back together after we have sourced the faulty bits and ordered them. I am hoping someone can identify the parts needed without us opening the box, so that we can drive the upcoming events with the box "as is" while we are waiting for new parts. When do you think we can expect to receive the parts needed if we find the part numbers and order them tomorrow?
Paul Whiffin
The oil can be with you in 2 days if needed, a day if you want to pay for it! The gearbox parts will have to come from Japan so about 2 weeks approx.

dude
You will need special tools to get that box apart.
Chris Wilson
What is the car used for? VERY few road car boxes will survive proper competition usage, especially if the torque and RPM fed through is much more than 20% above stock. I would ALWAYS say that in a case like yours it may, rules allowing, be far cheaper, long term, to fit a proper race type transmission and have it specced to do the job properly, not on a wing and a prayer Manual gearbox internal parts for road car boxes have always historically been expensive, hard to get and tricky to install. A race dog box is usually the opposite. I use a Tractive (Swedish made) dog box in my RWD Skyline and it could work for you, too. http://www.tractive.se/?id=02 Hewland make alternatives, as do Holinger and Drenth. halllon
Cheers Chris & Co A race dog box is on the list of mods for next season, but we don't have time to perform a custom box install now. We have been looking into many alternatives, including Sellholm, Tremec w/Liberty gear sets, X-trac Sequential, etc. What is the price of a suitable Tractive 2WD box? we have sourced a spare V160 gearbox which we are installing prior to our last Nordic race the upcoming weekend. We are bringing the V161 which has the 3rd gear shot to a guy who has succesfully rebuilt a couple of V160/V161s in the past, but he doesn't know any of the part numbers we need. However, he says we need the following parts: - 3rd gear - 3rd and 4th gear hub including synchro rings (he says these parts can be bought as a "service kit") He also mentioned that we need to know whether our synchro rings have 6 or 7 teeth. The gearbox is a 1998 V161 out of a JDM VVTi manual. Does anyone know which part numbers we need? We are grateful for all help given as unfortunately we are in a bit of a hurry. Chris Wilson
The five speed Tractive is about 9.5K Sterling over here, with lever and dashboard gear position display, with a bellhousing adaptor plate. They do a six speed but it's not as strong and why anyone would want six gears on a wide power band turbo engine I don't know. I would imagine buying from Norway may be cheaper, you'd have to check it out.
nero
Also consider installing a dog box gearset into the V160 transmission. Edited September 15, 2009 by nero (see edit history)
