Chris Wilson
I want to set up a very small bulletingboard (forum) for use by about 20 people. I run Windows, and I need a REALLY REALLY basic and easy to set up system with very low maintenance requirements. i looked at YABB, but the blurb recommends yphically intensive? Thanks.ou have knowledge of perl scripts, which I definitely do not have... What's free, simple, fast and none graphically intensive? Thanks. Keith C
PHPBB is pretty straightforward - contact me if you need somewhere to host it.
JamesG
Try Yahoo Groups: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/ It's free and all you have to do is sign up and create a new group. No maintenance or anything like that. You get adverts while looking at the posts though.
Guest greddy
This is what you want. http://www.phpbbforfree.com/
Lizzeh
Use a yahoo or google groups type thing Or phpbb is good. I use smf on my forum but I have my webhost install it using fantastico, so that won't help much.
Branners
its a little 'advert heavy' but http://www.ezboard.com is free and works quite well. JB
Chris Wilson
Sorry for delay in getting back, work and all that, surrounded by Supras... Anyway, I have downloaded PHBB and expanded the files into a directory on my hosts server. I have a "Developer Account" with them see http://www.gradwell.com/ Can I trouble you to tell me if this will run PHBB without me doing anything else? I am having troubles when it comes to telling it the two passwords. The Admin password I understand, but what's the first pasword the PHBB set up is asking for all about? I am trying to follow the Quick Install instructions below. Cheers. If you have basic knowledge of using FTP and are sure your hosting service or server will run phpBB 2 you can use these steps to quickly get started. For a more detailed explanation you should skip this and go to section 2 below. 1. Decompress the phpBB 2 archive to a local directory on your system. 2. Upload all the files contained in this archive (retaining the directory structure) to a web accessible directory on your server or hosting account. 3. Change the permissions on config.php to be writeable by all (666 or -rw-rw-rw- within your FTP Client) 4. Using your web browser visit the location you placed phpBB 2 with the addition of install/install.php, e.g. http://www.mydomain.com/phpBB2/install/install.php, http://www.mydomain.com/forum/install/install.php etc. 5. Fill out all the requested information and hit Submit 6. Change the permissions on config.php to be writeable only by yourself (644 or -rw-r--r-- within your FTP Client) 7. Click the Complete Installation button or revisit the location you entered above. 8. phpBB 2 should now be available, please MAKE SURE you read at least Section 8 below for important, security related post-installation instructions. If you experienced problems or do not know how to proceed with any of the steps above please read the rest of this document.
Chris Wilson
Sorted. I'd not file permissions set correctly.... I have had great fun realizing why you IT people earn good money. If this is "simple" I don't want to do any complicated stuff...!
