Thorin
Anyone using this type of device? I'm looking at something like this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twin-Pack-Homeplug-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B000SO94FA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1250509359&sr=1-3 I've heard about them but never actually used them before. I notice that they say "upto 85MB", is this upto more like 1MB in the real world or is it still pretty decent? I know you can get 200MB ones but I'm trying to decide if I'd need it or not. With a few break-in's around our estate (the now vacant next door's shed was broken into the other night), I'm looking at possibly getting a couple of cheap IP camera's, mounting on the side of the garage, and then I'd hopefully be able to plug one of these devices in the power socket in the garage and the other next to the router in the house. I presume the sockets in the garage are likely to be on the same ring main as the downstairs sockets (but I've not checked), so don't see why this wouldn't work if so? johnny g
I use the Devolo dLAN200's at home and they're more than adequate. I can stream HD content over them without issue. Perfectly good for me. My 200Mbit ones show up as 170-ish Mbit, but in reality, they flow enough to keep my 100Mbit switches busy. Well worth getting them over the 85's IMO
michael
I have 4 of them in the house with 2 IP cameras and various other things plugged into them, PS3, server etc - speed is much better than the wireless setup they replaced, no issues with anything at all, plug in and away you go. Highly recommended, I think I might even have the same ones you have in your pic, your house is fairly modern, can't see there being any issues with the rings being different. Excellent, just what I needed to hear. Now I just need to find a cheap outdoor IP camera or one with a suitable outdoor housing that it'll fit in. Any idea's? I haven't really looked in much detail but if you find anything let me know, I'd like to enhance Fort Knox a little bit more and add outdoor ones with decent night vision and a wider viewing angle. If you can find one to fit the Maplin dummy camera cases (aluminium without flashing lights) are waterproof and could be adapted easily enough... just not for the ones I have. Thorin
Ooh, I like the sound of this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/27X-PTZ-Internet-IP-Network-Camera-Security-CCTV-Dome_W0QQitemZ230362915393QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a2b32241&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262 Seems proper outdoor camera's aren't exactly what I'd call cheap (compared to webcams), seem to be a few like this one on ebay though. I just like the sound of 27x zoom and pan/tilt
michael
michael, Are these the 85Mbs ones that you use? I'd need to double check but I think so, when I bought mine there were entry level ones that were slower, mine at a respectable price and then the really expensive faster ones, I suspect I went with 85Mbs because I'm cheap like that. Whitesupraboy2
Ive got the netgear 200Mb ones to give my house 2 wireless access points to cover the whole house. Works really well. the house has had 2 extensions so i was a bit worried about the rings in my house but the communicated fine on any socket and also on multi plug extension leads too. So very impressed with them
