Mobile phone advice please... my friend Mr N95 has croacked his last :-(

I know there are always lots of threads about this and that with mobile phone... err... but thought I'd start another :)

I'm not really the 'cutting edge mobile phone guy'.. I have a Blackberry for work, which is cool for emails and the like, and an N95 for my personal use.

Sadly on Saturday night my trusty N95 was damaged slightly and the '0' button now works when it wants to :(

Hence, I need a new phone.

I called Orange (who I've been for ten years) and they said they don't make N95/96's any more... it seems the closest they do is the N86?

I literally want to put my 8Gb microSD card in the new phone and have a 'proper' headphone socket (I use mine for music all the time), it needs to be robust and withstand a night out(!) and be able to take pictures - usually drunken ones in nightclubs :innocent:

Has anyone got one of these phones? are they as trusty as the N95?

The only thing that I'm not keen on with this phone is it does look a bit boring... not that the N95 was setting the world of design on fire. Is there anything else you can think of that might be a good? I'm a bit of a Nokia fan boy if the truth be known.. I've been burnt by Samsungs and Sonys in the past - should I be scared of switching brand?

Should I be sacking Orange and running off to O2 to get an IPhone/Google phone or something? I'm not big on touch screen and the music/camera thing comes first for me (as well as talk/text obviously) - am I missing a trick? or is it just gadgetry for the sake of it? I'm not a huge iTunes fan tbh.

Any views on this? :)

Nokia N96 "Comes with Music Edition" seems to be the sensible choice if all you crave is something like the N95 that works - not a massive update but a nice enough phone.

N86 probably does what you want, N810 might be a bit too Blackberry and I'm not sure if Orange do them. 5800 might be OK if they give you the music downloads for free, otherwise I'd probably be looking at the Samsung i8910 HD (much nicer the Omnia I have, none of the Windows issues for starters) but I can't remember if it comes with a 3.5mm jack.

Apparently they don't make the N96 anymore... or that's probs what I would have gone for.

The Samsung i8910 HD looks quite nice... the the Jet one later? tbh I just saw a video of the Jet 'cube OS' thing and I don't think it's my cup of tea.

I think I'll see if the i8910 HD has the 3.5mm jack... and then I think we have a winner.

Thanks bud :)

N97?

I asked the guy at Orange about them and he said they'd been recalled already.. one of the blokes I works with had one and has sent it back already. I suspect Nokia are rushing out their 'iPhone killer' and not really testing it.

Without looking in any real detail I've just presumed the Jet is a cut down Omnia for the cool kids on an entry level budget, the HD is more of a flagship offering.

It looks very nice.... and has the all important headphone socket.

It's a big old unit of a phone though... I'm sure I'll be able to cope.

Thanks for the tip ;)

I've got the N85 and i absolutely love it. Its a bit buggy, as with all N-Series phones, but the features are top notch. Its a very compact phone compared to the n95 black i had previous. The main selling point for me is the radio transmitter, i use it on a daily basis. Best thing since the camera-phone IMO.

I'm guessing the N86 is the N85 replacement? I can't comment on the N86 as i haven't even seen it but if it is anything like the N85 then i would highly recommend it.

Don't go to an N96 from an N95 - I did and regretted it. It's slower and more cumbersome.

I'm now on an HTC Hero with a 8Gb SD Card in it. It has Media Players and can play your music sans worries. If you're staying with Orange, then that's a decent choice. Any of the other Nokia N Series will do the trick as well.

Alternative is to go to o2 and then new iPhone 3GS? Built around an iPod, you know it'll do what you need, and comes with 32Gb.

Personally, I'd look for a second hand N95 on eBay if you like it that much.

Decent camera rules both of those out straight away ;)

I'm glad you said that :D :innocent:

I know.. I did but they're still £100!?

The new upgrade one is free, and the bloke rearranged my talk plan (I'm currently paying £55 a month) and now it's double everything I have and with mobile internet access for £42 inc.VAT

Go me :) (and Michael ;))

That was what he N96 was here for and they appear to have only produced it for 10 months

Hope it works out OK, seems like a capable enough phone from the limited play time I've had - one of the users here is a bit of a wannabe geek so was quick to bring it round and show off when he got it. Video quality is excellent, interface much nicer that WM on the Omnia and it seems happy enough running sat nav software (plenty of downloads available in the usual "trial" places) and lots of other fun things that make it handy to have.

I'd swap mine for one if I could, the regular Omnia is a bit of a disappointment as standard.

Had one for a week but found it very buggy, can you update the ROMs on them Michael?

Yeah, plenty of roms out there but you're right, it's riddled with really naff bugs from the factory and Samsung really lag behind people like Nokia when it comes to getting updates out.

It's almost as if they didn't test the phone at all, silly things like remembering the camera settings, making the phone ring when someone calls you, making phone calls etc... the whole idea of wrapping up Windows Mobile with nice buttons is flawed when you still need to go in and do things behind the scenes.

It's got a lot of the bugs that I had with my XDA IIi, that's shocking considering it's a couple of versions on now with the OS.

I presume the HD went back to Symbian for this reason, much more stable.

Update :)

So the i8910HD arrived yesterday and it is a very sexy (if chunky) bit of kit :)

The screen is amazing and the OS is more or less the same as the N95. The HD video and camera are astounding - so much in fact that four of the iPhone users in my office are clambering to chop theirs in for one of these. The quality is so good it actually feels like a bit of a waste to have on a phone!? The games it comes with (Asphalt 4) are a bit rubbish, but I would imagine better ones will appear as it becomes more established.

The only real concern I have is dropping the thing. I'm actually considering paying for insurance on this bad boy.. I have a horrible feeling the screen won't make it to next week :D

Thanks Michael - very good shout Sir :)

If you can cope with a bit of extra bulk eBay is packed with hard and soft covers that cost under £5.00 delivered. I have a couple of these now and they stop the scratches in combination with the screen protectors that come with them.

To begin with I went for a Zagg invisibleSHIELD on mine, initially very good, made the phone more tactile and didn't add to the size but over time it went slightly yellow and began to peel off despite it not being subjected to any stick. You might have more luck but I was happy to get rid.

Glad you like it though.

Just brought an iphone 3gs, best thing I ever did when it comes to mobile technology!

Not so sure about that. I have an ipod touch and its one of the best bits of kit ever. I use it daily though and run out the battery almost every day. If it was my phone i would need to have a charger with me everywhere.

Mike - are you getting shot of the phucked N95?

Im after one.....

tbh the zero button works when it wants, and the screen has a few scratches on it.. it's been well loved. The case generally is also 'worn' I would say.

I was going to chop it into Mazuma and get the Argos vouchers (to put towards a Wii :D) but if you're willing to match that, it's yours.
