penguin
I feel for the 200+ soliders killed, but at the same time, i wonder just how many children, women and men these same people maimed or killed..... horses for courses.
AndrewOW
QUESTION? Why do we bother and what the hell are we doing there Supposedly to destroy the Taliban (which the West helped to 'create'), and completely destroy their enormous drug trade. IIRC Maybe it's just a pointless escapade. You decide.

marbleapple
I am sure the families are over the moon about it I am sure their brothers in arms are over the moon about it I shouldn't think they are. I would be upset too. You missed my point though. An interesting paragraph. To those who read this, please do it at face value and don't read any hidden meaning into it. I don't know marbleapple but I think I know what he's getting at. He's not claiming that the lives of the families aren't devastated by what's happened to them. He's not claiming that it's not a tragedy they've died... Thanks Stevie. Nice to see someone can read a sentence for what it is. no one could argue the point of democracy as its their country, my point was the mentality of the people making these kind of medieval rules whan he have woman over being killed fighting for them, It wasn't long ago when women couldn't vote in this country or that there were 2 systems for black and white people in the US. They are much further behind us in terms of social evolution and there are clear reasons for this. Give them a couple of years and it *might* be different. We have to let it take its natural course not force it as I suspect forcing people to do anything will simply cause more problems than it's worth. as for the numbers i think your way off with that mate and the situations were completely different, WW2 was a fight for the survival of our country, Afganistan and Iraq are more to do with political aims, my personal view is we should never have deployed troops to Afganistan, history is well and truly against us, we got beat there before, the Ruski's deployed around 1 million men and still pulled out, when faced with fanatics wars in these situations are very difficult to win (Vietnam), the Canadians have realised this and now have dates for phased withdrawal Well I have no intention of discussing whether the war was vailid, I personally think it is a pointless exercise now in any event as we are there and now need to do a good job, but I would disagree with you in relation to the figures. My main point of the numbers post as Stevie understood was that we have invaded a country and are now trying to create peace. Whilst it is sad that 200+ good men and women have died on foreign soil I feel that the figure is very small when compared to armed conflicts in the past and the media is simply trying to make it a huge issue. There was a fact recently (and sadly I can't find it so you will have to take my word for it) that you were more likely to be hit by a bus in the UK than shot as a soldier in Iraq. You don't see the media harping on about the number of kills by buses though do you? The soldiers over there do a superb job and I am very proud that I am from the same country as them. They seem to understand the risks and you don't often see them moaning about being shot at... its the newspapers and TV that love to aggitate the people sitting on their sofas at home.
