Dazzi
I came to start my car and nothing then tried again and nothing and on about the 5th attempt it fire up but spluttered. When it happened again one of my mates said just tap on it so I did. After doing this it started fine but I realised we tapped on the alternator (left side of engine).... so what is actually buggered the starter or the alt? I have had no loss of power ever from the battery as I can play music fairly loud for about 30mins +... If it is the starter motor that shot why does tapping the alt work? lol
jevansio
When you tapped was it a regular tap..tap..tap, or a fast tap.tap.tap, or a slow tap....tap....tap, or a rhythmic tap.tap....tap..tap?

If not, did the dash lights go dim? did you hear a loud click when you turned the key? Sounds like Starter contacts to me. Oh and tapping the Alternator wont do anything. After about the 5th attempt it finally turned over but struggled to. The dash light were going dim yes as I was trying to start it but as I said previously it can't be the battery. Yea when I turned the key it went 'CLICK' but didn't turn over then 'CLICK' again. It does this until it fires up.
Jimmer
If your sure the Battery is good then the click and no turning over would most likely be Starter contacts. There not expensive and you can do it yourself, theres a guide on here somwhere.
Ian C
Hitting the starter (or I guess near it in the early stages) says it's on the way out, but it can be rebuilt. I know Chris Wilson can refurb them for a lot less than a new one, other people may be able to do it as well. Have a search for starter solenoids and see what you get -Ian
