hodge
I'm doing some work on another members car and have hit abit of a stumbling block. The car is a jspec tt conversion. It drives fine until the 2nd turbo spooled and gradually the temp rise to over 100 degrees.I've changed the thermostat, rad and water pump even bled the engine off for ages tip there's no air in at all. I've doña a sniff test and even that came up ok. Totally stumped now. I did notice the bottom part of the fan cover/cowling was missing so I'm starting to think this could be the answer. The car still has an n/a rad in and if the bottom cowl isn't catching the air from the fan, hence it just going anywhere and increasing engine coolant temps. What do you all recon. Thanks John
heckler
probably the rad is too small...
SUPRALOOPY
Yeah that. There is quite a difference in thickness.
hodge
The conversion was done at qsd over a year ago and there's been no problem with cooling until now.
SUPRALOOPY
Do you have after market gauges? water temp/oil temp etc.. have you got a laser thermometer to use? then you can take the gauges out of the loop and measure the rad/engine/pipes etc.. Could just be a sender telling lies.
hodge
Its a defi temp gauge fitted in a greddy hard pipe (top rad pipe).
Jimmer
I know of another members car with a TT conversion which has no fan shroud at all and doesnt suffer from any overheating problems when driven hard. However, I dont have any helpful suggestions:)

Thanks John How long has the temp gauge been fitted? and how much over 100C does it go? my average water temp has always been around 98C, measured with a very accurate thermocouple system. Ian C
It might be possible that the second turbo oil seal has gone to a point where exhaust gas is heating the oil up. I'd imagine a big cloud of smoke from that though.
Bossco
The gauge has been in place ever since the conversion was done, last April. Up until February the sensor was mounted in an adaptor in the stock top rad pipe. Then the stock rad pipe was replaced with a Greddy hard pipe. Following the thermostat and water pump change the temp hasnt gone over 100 degrees, but I think thats only because I've been backing off once it starts to rise. It would continue to rise if I didnt slow down. On the day I noticed it was over heating the temp reached 115 degrees when I was driving very, very hard. My oil temps are not affected. Jake
It drives fine until the 2nd turbo spooled and gradually the temp rise to over 100 degrees.I've changed the thermostat, rad and water pump even bled the engine off for ages tip there's no air in at all. I reckon 100c is not a problem. You can be up to 115-120C (240-250F) before you are needing to worry and back off to get temps down a bit. Probably lots of folks are getting similar temps but just don't know about it due to the rubbish stock Temp gauge. The NA rad isn't ideal but TT Supes have run them OK. Although obviously I'd look to change it for a proper TT rad if cooling is becoming an issue.
