hogmaw
First of all they charge 40 odd quid for a simple ink cartridge for their machines, then they charge 9 quid post to send them (actual postage cost 72p). WHAT A RIP OFF. Next time I assess options for our postage system (I have a mail order business) I will not be considering using Pitney Bowes. Thank you for listening. Branners
they are all a ripoff though. Our Optimail franking machine uses 2 red ink cartridges at £120 for the pair. You then have to buy a postage update chip when the Royal Mail changes prices which comes in around £120. The savings are so minimal now that we may go full electronic printing next time out. Hobgoblin
I had this happen to me at work, I decided to get the old cartridge refilled locally. This only cost half as much, the problem was it was refilled with the wrong ink, which trashed all the jets on the franking machine. Luckily for me, when I called the Pitney-Bowes engineer he was very understanding, and booked the job as warranty.
AndrewOW
Could this be a better solution for you? http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400046&mediaId=26800663 Just use your existing laser printer on to labels, some scales, and Bob's your proverbial uncle! It does depend on the quantity of franked items you have though, but I've used it before, and it's pretty good.

Yes we do a lot like 1 or 2 bagfuls a day, 90% are boxes and packets, many of which go overseas. The royal mail systems you suggested isn't really appropriate, and the one they do have that works is longwinded and time consuming!

We use it our our place of work, as we don't have a huge amount of post. It works well, and we never run out of stamps either
tooley
why not go for ppi mailing instead do away with franked mail all together and judging by your volumes you could be inlines for royal mail business rates.... if you think the price for the ink is bad wait until you have to shell out for industrial letter openers i swear there is nothing to them yet they set us back 4k each
