I'd go for something along these lines

merckx
Unfortunately you won't get much for £150 if you're after a new bike. You'll get a much better quality bike if you go for a secondhand one. Quite a few sellers on ebay don't offer delivery so you could potentially get a bargain by finding one near to you as there won't be as many people interested in a local area compared to the whole country. Carl_S
firstly congratulations. Getting a bike is a marvellous thing, and it is fantastic that you have a total of one hundred and fifty pounds to spend on this venture. Ebay is a great place to find bikes, so well done again for coming up with that idea. As regards to being confused with what kind of bike to buy here is my advice. 1. Go for a bike with two wheels 2. Go for a bike that is either pretty or sexy looking 3. Try not to buy a woman's bike because you are a man. Apart from that mate, just have fun with it. I am sure you will be fine and love your new purchase. It will make you fitter and even more sexy looking too. Happy bidding.

Scooter
London "Gumtree" is a good place to look for bikes as well, some great and cheap old school bikes appear here.
rob wild
I got into cycling a year or so ago and tbh it's 'horses for courses'! If you're going to do mostly road work then I wouldn't be getting a mountain bike. I love my mountain bike but on the road its just very slow and totally useless IMO but off road its amazing, the stuff I can get down is great However I use my road bike just as much covering perhaps 30-40 miles a session. Its really quick although after a few hours it does become uncomfortable. You could always get a hybrid? Something in the middle i.e. a nice comfortable ride however nice and light with a good rolling resistance

dane_stone
Thought i'd pinch this thread instead of starting my own I'm after a MTB it will be used for roads and a bit of riding in the woods. I've only got £150 to spend I've had a look around and this seems a good bargin. Any thoughts if it's a good bike for a beginner? Is coyote a good make? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COYOTE-ILLINOIS-MTB-RRP-225-95-ON-SALE-AND-MUST-GO_W0QQitemZ150381962672QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Bikes_GL?hash=item230376a5b0
