mattysupra
help please, waiting to refiet valves but cant work out which seal is exhaust or inlet. The new ones are different. One has a brown rubber that lips on top of the metal valve seal. The other is black and more metal on show. Which is which? The old ones i took out look the same as each other but the exhaust side has a number on but the inlet is blank . Thanks.
Jake
I'd have thought that the black/metal ones are for the exhaust valves. Do you have the part numbers of the seals you've bought?
mattysupra
thats what i was thinking also. I have no numbers. Im building it for my cousin who brought the car off me a while back. He has brought a head kit direct from japan and they have put the new valve seals all in the same bag with no reference or numbers to tell them apart. However i need to get them the correct away around! what is the difference between the two sides? (exhaust/inlet) as i have measured thickness of valve shafts and they seem the same
Jake
Here you go mate... See post number 16 in Tony License's "How To: Valve Stem Seal Replacement" thread Edited August 13, 2009 by Jake (see edit history)
mattysupra
thanks mate but i already read that when searching for my answer. Im confused as it says bronze out side colour. These are brown rubber? Also it says exhaust is grey colour where these are black rubber? what do you think?
Jake
Hmmm, I dunno then Matt. I'm wondering if your ones are genuine Toyota parts or if they're some cheap eBay type chinese knock-off parts. You might be getting yourself into more trouble than it's worth.
mattysupra
there not genuine but led to belive they are made by the same people who make the toyota ones. I think im going to have to order the correct toyota ones to be safe
Jake
I think im going to have to order the correct toyota ones to be safe I think that would be the wise thing to do. It's not the sort of job you'd want to do twice, is it! fyi: When I priced this job up a while ago I found it was as cheap to buy a complete head service kit (Head gasket etc) as to buy the stem seals alone. (that was through Steve Manley)
Chris Wilson
Aren't the tops of the guides a different diameter, so one set won't go on the larger guides? Can't remember now, I have had so many different engines apart and rebuilt recently! Almost certainly the metal sleeved seals go on the exhausts anyway.
