Can you elaborate on the "self indulgent" and "saying a lot about society" comment?

Do you also feel the same way about people who share a blog or a personal web site (I have neither BTW) and what about the Twitter site, does that come under the same description?

I can't be ars** explaining as 90% people on here are on facebook and most likely won't admit how sad it is. I am impressed martini responded. And I agree with his comments.

And the funny thing is 9 times out of 10, when someone asks "are you on face book?"

And you say "I don't do the facebook thing".

Their response is almost always the same..

"I don't either, I only use it because [insert bad predictable excuse here], I hardly ever use it".

"course not"

yeh right - lol

I use facebook occassionaly. It can be indulgent, but not I suspect in CJ's case.

Anyway, back to the Op's thread - he's available on FB if you wish to get in touch, other than on here.

I take it Martin(i) you won't be joining him then?

I agree entirely that CJ doesn't use FB for self-indulgent purposes, and won't be joining him on Facebook but I do hope he gets from it what he wants

Thanks! I did a bit of normal work and it wasn't much fun!

Mate, if we were on facebook I would like, so be adding you right now :D

EDIT: I find it odd that when asked "are you on facebook?", that when I say "No" the person then asks "Why not?". It's got to the point that being on facebook is a default position. Surely I should be asking them why they are on it!

I can see (and have read) why it's useful for you Colin as I have you as a friend, but I again have stopped using facebook as it has no real use for me.

I briefly started using it again as I was invited to a friends birthday party and they used facebook to keep friends informed. It was useful to be kept up to date and where the venue was eventually going to be and what time etc...

Since then I have been on less and less and have stopped again.

Colin, it has nothing to do with the fact I had to read your posts on how hot and nice the weather was, how you were off for a swim to cool down, having another lie in, and had a great night at the bar :p You lucky git :D

I feel like the only young person in the UK below who finds it pretty sad and have not signed up despite the peer pressure.

Happy to see on the other thread I am not the only one. Can't imagine rushing home uploading photos and crap. Really sad.

Couldnt agree more with what your saying.

For me once you join Facebook you dont have a private life anymore!

If you chose to give a live running commentary of your life - well that's one thing, but if you use it now and then, and/or you are mindful of what it is you are typing, then no - you still have a private life.

For instance, I'm on facebook - what do you know about me?

Nothing!

That's right, because I wouldn't accept you or add you.

You would if he was a stunning model with big boobs and shared the same friends and supposedly wanted to know you and knew your name. If you still wouldn't, I'd be very surprised

I agree about the commentary part though. Not everyone runs a life blog though most do.

I can't be arsed with the whole Facebook thing either. I've got a Myspace account that I hardly ever use except for checking the occasional band profile.

It's also quite pointless for me as the hotel I reside in Monday to Thursday blocks damn near everything, so I wouldn't be able to use it anyway. The people I want to contact me have my mobile number & email address and I'm on Skype, that's it.

Lucy got onto FB a while ago to try and catch up with some friends who are notoriously hard to track down by any other means and has ended up getting addicted to the stupid games. She'll log on every few hours at the weekend to water a stupid plant in a virtual garden and try to find creatures.

Ah, a bookface debate! :)

I use it a bit, once a week at most. It doesn't take me long to look at what I want to look at. Personally I have no time for the "applications" you can add, or updating my status to let people know what was in my sandwiches today. It has its uses (receiving invites to birthday parties mainly), but I think its usage will fall off quite quickly when it's no longer the Hot New Social Networking Website. Social networking sites rely on lots of people joining up and being active members. When the great unwashed get bored of it, it'll probably die a slow death.

Friends Reunited, anyone? ;)

I do think facebook can play a useful role in people's lives, but without the huge following of the fashion-conscious masses (who leave leave it eventually), I don't know if it can survive long-term.

I have Facebook, I use it occasioanlly to keep in touch with friends and get invites to social gatherings. CBA putting the time into it to do much else, so I don't. I do however know someone who updates her status at least 10 times a day - this I feel is rather sad. I update mine maybe once a week, usually when something interesting is happening/happened that I wish to share. Application wise... Ignore all of them :D

Some people think far too much about the reasons why facebook is so wrong.

I have a blog and facebook page. I mention key facts in my life and day to day stuff I've done on my blog and write about things I've liked etc.

Facebook is an excellent way of keeping in contact with my friends and family as I am now 300 miles away from most of them. I upload pictures of places I've been and stuff and it's nice when we chat on the phone and we discuss the pics etc.

Yes, there are people who discuss their daily bowel habits but not everyone online is an attention whore.

I'm editing to say that there is so much privacy in place now, you can make sure only people you want to can see what you're writing.
