I just read the thread here and was wondering how many other folks use FB. I use it as a means to keep in contact as it is easier than "normal" means due to my location.

If any of you are on FB and want to add me then look at the bar FB page here and send a request.

If you want to join up to the bar page too then that would be cool. :)

Took me a while to sign up to FB, when I did I never used it for well over a year. Use it every day now, excellent to keep in contact with my mates in the States who don't have MSN.

Other than that it is a pain in re to those silly applications people use. :eyebrows:

I agree on the silly applications front but like you, I use it daily to keep in touch with family and friends. I find it easier to use and more informative than MSN.

Agreed, I only use MSN for the chat side of it other than that I find usually all aspects of MSN are rubbish including their Email.

I feel like the only young person in the UK below who finds it pretty sad and have not signed up despite the peer pressure.

Happy to see on the other thread I am not the only one. Can't imagine rushing home uploading photos and crap. Really sad.

I'm another, as is my girlfriend.

We're not on there either. It's rather self-indulgent.

Yes, it is easier to keep in touch with people - but it's not that hard to do it in other ways!

People that I really want to keep in touch with, I do so actively. I don't really have anything in common with old school friends these days, otherwise we'd have kept in touch...

Why do you think it is / I am sad because I use a medium to keep in touch with family and friends? I work very unusual hours out here and therefore never have the same spare time as others back in the UK and the only way to keep in touch is via a PC.

I could use traditional Email but then that means I have to rely on people emailing me back whereas on FB I can read whatever they post - including pics etc.

What is wrong with phone/email/face to face contact.

All I hear about facebook..

"..I can't believe they split up..."

"...I wonder what mrs x is doing.."

"... I can't believe he blocked me"

"...how come she/he missed my birthday, its on my page!"

"..I have 9000 friends now, I must be super popular"

"..who is this guy who tried to add me"

"..he hasn't responded to my message ...what should I do"

All sorts of absolute rubbish rumours/chit chat gossip. Like a closeup magazine for your friends.

I see little goodness in it. All the above is super sad in my opinion.

This is true, but in my opinion if someone doesn't contact me directly, they don't care if I know about something or not.

For instance, I just got an email from a friend in Japan - directed to me, telling me what he's been up to in the past few months.

That's much nicer to receive than just reading random stuff constantly on facebook.

This is all my opinion, but I have enough time sinks on the internet without adding facebook to the list :)

Almost like rushing home to post on a car forum eh? :D

To be fair I think it is kinda sad and I got addicted and now have the bug. I try to keep my posts below 3 per day. I am leaving slowly..:innocent:

And anyway at least its people I don't know, and I don't go into personal chit chat about my life. And post my life blog for the world to hear about it and add fake friends to my lists etc.

I notice that Martini has posted 1408 times in 5 months. That's an average of 281 a month or close to 10 a day.

Now, some people may call that sad and suggest you get a life away from the forum - I couldn't possibly comment! :D

This is quite right. As I said, I have multiple time sinks on the internet, this being my largest!

Problem is, I am now writing up my thesis... which is pretty tough! Any little distraction I can find, is good enough for me. If I were on facebook, I would be on it right now.

As it happens, I am reading up about the car that I love and have entered a debate as to whether facebook is a waste of time or not! :)

I think it's a waste of time because it's very self-indulgent and just says a lot about society these days.

I am a member of multiple forums on multiple topics (computer games for one), and many people would say that's sad - and they'd be right!

I lurked here for 6 months and just read and read (learning about the car). Then I joined up and finally got a Supra. Some of the guys (and gals) on here are great and there are some rather interesting topics discussed :)

I am very rarely on during the weekend and post more in the day than night because I would rather type this than work on the thesis... (I hope I finish one day) :innocent:

Maybe I will try to post here a little less...

I have to agree

Same here - I mainly joined for trading supra stuff and solving problems but some topics are indeed interesting/funny so I check 'em out every so often

Same; I post at work during the day as I get paid a lot for posting on here - haha :D. As soon as I am home I get on with my real life.

Can you elaborate on the "self indulgent" and "saying a lot about society" comment?

Do you also feel the same way about people who share a blog or a personal web site (I have neither BTW) and what about the Twitter site, does that come under the same description?

Actually doing some real work for once, so I will be brief! :)

Uploading a load of photos to a folder on ones facebook and waiting for comments from people that one haven't-seen-for-15-years-but-one-went-to-school-with-them-so-one-"knows"-them, strikes me as a little bit self indulgent. One is awaiting confirmation and approval - hell, just wanting attention.

Of course though, there are the real friends that one also talks to through some other medium than facebook.

As for society; much of the above, but also sprinkle on a bit more of the notion of people only ever talking to people on facebook... it's all rather shallow (unless you are thousands of miles away - but I always manage a phone/skype convo).

Do you also feel the same way about people who share a blog or a personal web site (I have neither BTW) and what about the Twitter site, does that come under the same description?

Depending on the topic of a blog, though I rarely find them focussed about a person. Facebook is a blog about yourself... Most blogs are about a different topic and are thus, less self-indulgent.

Personal websites - depends on the content. I have one - promoting my photography. I don't have one saying "look at my life".

Twitter is a bit self indulgent, but it depends whom you follow. I know people that solely use it for up to date RSS news.

I also don't like the idea of being so readily searchable on the internet.

Damn, that wasn't very brief.

EDIT: I wonder if anyone actually writes letters to each other any more. Can people under 18 write these days?

EDIT 2: I should add that I have a psycho ex-girlfriend that put me off facebook big time about a year ago!

I use facebook occassionaly. It can be indulgent, but not I suspect in CJ's case.

Anyway, back to the Op's thread - he's available on FB if you wish to get in touch, other than on here.

I take it Martin(i) you won't be joining him then?
