benkei
I have seen 3 new speed cameras pop up in the aera where I live. They are on the Birmingham New road in Coseley, two going towards Wolverhampton, and one going towards Dudley/Birmingham. I remember reading that speed cameras were to be placed in areas which had 3 or more accidents (not even speeding related) but I have only seen 2 accidents in the past year, and both were nothing to do with speed, and more to do with driver's incompitence to use a crossroad. There have been no accidents in the places where the speed cameras have been placed, and I feel they are there purely to collect revenue for the the government, and have no road safety aspect. I don't think putting speed cameras there is justified at all, and I would like to contest them, but I don't know how??
Lbm
I'd advise more to be placed there.
michael
Are you there 24/7 to monitor all accidents? Near where I live a couple of joyriders have smashed stolen cars into the same bridge and killed themselves, this means we now have 8 cameras in that small stretch of road. Obviously no more cars have been stolen since and joyriding is a thing of the past as a result.
benkei
Joy riders in a stolen car? I don't think anyone driving a stolen car is going to be put off by a speed camera... They won't get any speeding fines! How about a higher police presence instead? That way when a stolen car, a car without tax, insurance, M.O.T, someone driving without a licence or a banned driver go driving along they stand a higher chance of being caught? If they don't speed, who will catch them? The cameras are useless unless you're speeding. Also, I don't like the feeling of constantly being watched, and monitored. I feel it invades my right to privacy Anyway, I'm not looking to get into a debate over whether you think they are right or wrong, I just want information, an answer to my question. To be fair, I think they got put off by a bridge. Phone your council. if theyr'e no help, the local police station - if they're no help CAB and if they're no help - Dominos Pizza. Thorin
How about a higher police presence instead? Perhaps the speed cameras are to raise money for the higher police presence.

TrickTT
You can go to the west midlands "saftey" camera partenership website and contact them from there. They also publish before and after accident statistics for camera sites.
Gaz6002
You should move to Swindon. They've stopped funding fixed scameras in favour of mobile units. ...because it's much more ethical to steal our money by hiding behind a tree to catch us out. wrenlea
I feel they are there purely to collect revenue for the the government, and have no road safety aspect. This is the same govt that is switching off motorway lights in the middle of the night as it will save money at the expense of only a small increase in accidents. Clearly it is all about cash...... benkei
You can go to the west midlands "saftey" camera partenership website and contact them from there. They also publish before and after accident statistics for camera sites. Just checked out this site, doesn't look like the cameras have been put on their map yet. So I checked out a few more cameras in the area, and according to their statistics I see no evidence of cameras preventing accidents. It looks like a case of 'accidents happen'. Some show accidents increase and then descrease, some have no accidnts at all (so what's with the camera??) and some decrease and then increase. Apparently, the evidence from one camera shows more accidents since it was put there! I shall keep my eye on the site to see if and when these new cameras are updated on their site, then I can check their statistics. For anyone else interested, here's the link: Camera map

I've just moved away from Swindon, and I never saw any police units hiding to catch people to be fair. I rate the police in Swindon quite highly, well, compared to other places. Found it quite an easy area to get out and about without any hassle.
Carl_S
There are many ways to contest them, 1) Go up to one, and say "I contest you" loudly three times. 2) Urinate on one of them 3) Get your friend to do number 2 4) Get the same friend to do a number 2 next to it 5) Do none of the above and instead symbolically do the above by writing a stern and well-argued letter to your MP, and copy the same to your council
caseys
Speed cameras = better than speed bumps less fixed point cameras would mean more mobile cameras. In Bournemouth the council are having a debate at the moment about turning off all the fixed cameras and having more police presence around, mobile cameras and dreaded traffic calming schemes (speed bumps, chicanes etc) and then probably 2p of the savings on fixing the potholes. I'd have fixed cameras, at least you can tell where those are
Guigsy
I like fixed speed cameras. I know when to slow down...
