Tinting Spray, Stay away from Savage.

Recommended Posts

Over the past few weeks i have been tinting different parts of my car. It started off with the side markers/indicators, for which i used E-Tech spray. The E-Tech stuff comes in a 150mm can and didn't really go far. After 2 botched attempts at the rear markers & one practice go on a spare, i barely had enough left to tint all the markers. So, when i decided to do the facelift indicators and rear middle brake light, i thought it would be better to try the 400ml Savage tinting spray.

For the love of god do not make the same mistake that i did. The stuff is absolutely GASH. It drys in as hazy as you like and even though i tried to lacquer them to bring out the black it still had no effect. Needless to say i have ordered another can of the E-Tech stuff hoping that i can just put a couple of coats over what i have just now to bring it up to the standard of the other makers.

E-Tech - Expensive but you get what you pay for.... seriously.

Have you been over the lights with a fairly gentle polish (that has a bit of cut) to see if that improves things?

I did my MR2 toblerones with Foliatec tinting spray many years ago and needed to polish them afterwards to get rid of the slightly textured finish.

I tried a couple of different things to improve the finish but nothing worked. I even tried T-cut of all things lol.

When all else failed i used some 800 grit and then gave them a lacquer. That DID help a little bit but the E-Tech stuff was flawless. It even has a sort of gloss look to it.

My only dilema now is whether to strip it right back and start from scratch or hope that a couple of coats of the new stuff will fix it. If i have to strip them back, if it goes like the last time, i might not have enough spray with 1 can. I think to do the job right i will just clean off the spray (comes off with thinners) and start from scratch.

Cheers

I used the savage stuff to do my rear lights, brake bar and indicators and the end result was good. Mind you I did give them 3 - 4 caots and after the final coat I used 1500 wet and dry to take out any imperfections then gave it a good coat of clear lacquer, when dry i again used 1500, then cutting compound then a machine polish.

800 grit sounds to me a little harsh to use just before you lacquer?

I have no experience using the E-tech stuff so cannot really do a comparison.

Hope you get it sorted anyway mate ;)

Jesus that sounds like a task and a half.

I'm pretty sure with all the work you mentioned i could get them looking decent. But seriously, i sprayed the e-tech on the markers, 4 coats later the job was done.

I havent' touched them with anything. The match to my paintwork is just ridiculously flukey lol. I've ordered a can of the e-tech stuff now so i'll take before and after pics. I'll take pics of the lights as they are right now with the savage then i'll take pics once i have finished with the e-tech. I won't use any paper, polish or lacquer.

Yeah to be honest it was a bit of a task , but I think it was just me being really picky :innocent:

But its does now sound like the E-tech stuff is alot more straight forward :sly:

Like you said you will have to show some pics before and after etc

I know its been a while but i got messed around on ebay, i know.. shocker. Eventually i got my can of tinting spray so i got round to spraying them today. I know the picture isn't great, it was tough to hold them and take a pic, but you can see the difference is like night and day.

Been thinking about tiniting my rear lights, how much is that e-tech stuff Scott ?

Wasn't expensive, I got it from ebay. Think it worked out around a fiver a tin. It doesn't go far though, 150ml tin gets used in no-time.

can you get various shades of tint scott? im thinking doing a light tint on the rears

not sure what i want to do with the fronts yet, might just swap them for facelifts

You just vary the amount of coats you put on it for various levels of tint. I just kept going until it matched the paintwork. If i didn't have LED indicators there is no way they would be legal.

1 coat of the stuff is very very very light.

Slightly off topic but are those angel eyes you have in your headlight?

Yeah bud, did a couple of sets now. Those were the hardest though.

Ah I see. I guess you must send your current lights to a member here to have them done aye?

No, I did them. As I said "Did a couple of sets now" ;)

Check out my site, there are a couple of pics of them being put together. Glass angel eyes are the current ones.

Ah alright! How much roughly does a pair cost mate? Also, is it difficult wiring the angel eye ?

Ta.

The angel eyes work out around £85 including the inverters & postage.

Wiring them in is fairly straight forward, you just wire the inverters into the sidelights. The angel eyes plug into the inverters, although i recommend hardwiring them as it is a weak link IMO.
