Chris Wilson
My Mercedes truck has an EPS transmission (electro pneumatic selection, I think it stands for). Anyway it selects going up the box fine. All sixteen speeds with high / low range change, but coming down it will occasionally go nto neutral instead of a the next lower gear. The transmission is the earlier type with the selector lever on a central console, not on the drivers RH seat armrest. I suspect it's electrical, but need a shop manual or someone who knows their foibles. Thanks. It's perfectly drivable like this, just a bit of a PITA. TrickTT
Does it do it between any two specific gears or just on any downchange? Have you tried the gearbox reset procedure - something to do with the manual selector knob under the flap behind the main shift lever, but its been a long time since i've driven an eps1 'box i cant remember exactly what it is. I can have a word with our mechanics at work tonight.
Chris Wilson
Seems to be around the high range, 6 to to 4 sort of range. Would need to analyse in more detail to be specific. Sometimes just manoeuvring from first to reverse hits a neutral. I'll get the model code and post up later, thanks!
TrickTT
Getting reverse on those boxes was always a nightmare, even when new. Slowing the change down helps. clutch..........slowly but firmly pull shifter back........... ease clutch up. They make a very distinctive sound when the shift is just right - you can usually learn to judge it just from the noise.
