Tee from China
Whilst on the SF found this link where a guy has used an external wastegate instead of the small internal one on standard twins - good or bad thing? link:- http://www.utahracing.com/supras/matt/matt94/wastegate/index.htm
Jamesy
If it means i can whack a screamer pipe on then good!!
j_jza80
Will doing this make restrictor rings redundant?
Tricky-Ricky
Will doing this make restrictor rings redundant? Yes! as long as the waste gate/pipework is of adequate size, lot of buggering about though, for only a small gain.
Jamesy W
If it means i can whack a screamer pipe on then good!! Can anyone hazard a cost as to how much something like this would run you? I'm gonna be having my J specs replaced shortly, so may give it a whirl. Edited August 8, 2009 by Jamesy W (see edit history)

mikeyb10supra
its a very worthwhile mod for a j-spec car in my opinion
DuaneT.Turbo
Is there any more info on this? I dont really understand external wastgate setups very good, i always thought that you had to have after market turbo's? Is there a kit to go with the atandard twins? Love the chattering Cheers D
Gaz6002
The chattering isn't the wastegate. It's compressor stall caused by ineffective release of back pressure when the throttle is closed.
JustGav
its a very worthwhile mod for a j-spec car in my opinion Not sure, I'd agree... The amount of work to do it is a lot... remember the stock manifolds are cast and are fairly complex, so you would need to somehow drill it, get it to the right diameter for the waste, then fit one and then get the screamer pipe either ducted out of the car or into the exhaust.. Something just tells me that toyota got it right....

Love the chattering There are no external wastegate kits available for the stock turbos, it would require modification of the stock manifold/turbos and some custom fabrication. If someone had the skills to do it themselves then it may be a worthwhile mod on a J-spec setup. If you were paying someone to do the work it would be very expensive for negligible gains. As Gaz explained the 'chattering' is not caused by the wastegate.
j_jza80
As Gaz explained the 'chattering' is not caused by the wastegate. Removing the stock BOV and fitting an aftermarket induction kit should achieve that though.
