tony tt
So there i was driving around ipswich with my girlfriend minding my own business when a motorbike cop pulls up next me and says "Please follow me to a vehicle testing area". So i followed the little lego man to a flood lit car park next to the football stadium. The police and vossa were in there in force with all seperate bays checking cars and i thought what the f~#ck am i doing in here it was wall to wall with saxos, escorts and the usual boy racer buckets. As each cop walked past a few said nice car or fancy bit of kit you have there which i thought was nice but in the back of my mind i knew i was headin for a wallet raping when they get finished! So got to the allocated bay for my car they check it over and my number plates are illegal now after being in the same situation only six months ago in the same car park? There standard plates with the british standard code in the corner and i have the scottish flag on them thats all! My exhaust is illegal now nothing was mentioned the previous time it was there and they did test it at 84db but the guy let me off. This time 99db at 2000rpm fail told me to change it he said the standard supe exhaust is barely legal as it is. So my little pose around the town just cost me £60 for the two fails im not a happy man.

Scott
Time to make money bud, thats pretty much it. The plates have been illegal for a while but noone is really fussed about it. I bought plates from a place who advertisies "only legal plates" and mine have scottish flags on them lol. Its a disgrace really, PC madness as usual. The police chopper has been up every night so far over my house and around the place so they must be needing money to keep it up there! Its mad the reg is the proper size and spacing is correct the thing is it passed the same test six months ago with the same plate!

Aero-M
what a bummer Tony, I was going to take mine out tonight but may give that a miss, my new exhaust and decat is ubber loud. I can understand them pulling saxo's etc over for having loud exhausts but something like a bpu supra or super/sports car isn't going to be quiet by its nature. I could understand if the exhaust was at full chat in the town but it wasnt! Just to let you know, your exhaust reading was probably taken wrong to fudge the results You really need to know the rules so that you can point it out to them. Usually they casually say "oh yes, i never even noticed" and then do the test properly.
Aero-M
Have they told you to change it and take it back for them to test it?
tony tt
Have they told you to change it and take it back for them to test it? They did say change it but i wasnt to have a re-test the cop spoke to vossa and they said they were too busy and to send me on my way. Im not changing it martin theres louder cars than ours in town and there pieces of shit im not going to the expense of that. The guy said if i get pulled at the roadside what happened tonight wont count as its a seperate check.

bluecoup
so every car in the country that has the flags on or number plates fitted before the new regs has to go get new plates ? what a load of cobblers
garethr
He said the flags are not allowed any more and haven't been for 18 mths! That's odd. The DVLA site says (in leaflet INF104): You may, if you wish, display a GB national flag with letters on the number plate at the extreme left of the plate. The flags you can choose from are: Union Flag, the Cross of St George, the Scottish Saltire, the Red Dragon of Wales The letters you can choose from are: Great Britain or GB; United Kingdom or UK; ENGLAND or England or ENG or Eng; SCOTLAND or Scotland or SCO or Sco; CYMRU or Cymru or CYM or Cym; WALES or Wales Although number plates displaying these national flags and letters would be legal when travelling outside the United Kingdom they are not acceptable for identification purposes. To meet international circulation requirements the oval GB Sticker would also need to be displayed when travelling outside the United Kingdom. Alternatively number plates displaying the European symbol may be used when travelling within Europe. You are not allowed to display any other flag or symbol and this only applies to vehicles registered in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland (NI) is excluded, leaving the European Flag as the only acceptable symbol there. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/Doitonlinemotoring/DG_10031646 Google finds news items saying that they are legal as well. Bobbeh
indeed......barely audible more like! My thoughts exactly, what the hell is this country coming to - pettiness to the extreme. I don't even understand the point about the flag on his plate, I thought the only thing they cared about was that the spacing and letter sizing on the plate was correct so they could be read in by their ANPR systems. I suppose the Scottish flag is confusing it looking like an 'X' lol.
benkei
My thoughts exactly, what the hell is this country coming to - pettiness to the extreme. Exactly it. I don't even understand the point about the flag on his plate, I thought the only thing they cared about was that the spacing and letter sizing on the plate was correct so they could be read in by their ANPR systems. I think it depends on how anal they are about it, or if they've met their quota for the month. If I were you mate, I'd contest the fine, using the reference from the DVLA website as your basis. They can't go bending and changing the rules all the time just to suit themselves and make some money. This kind of bullying and oppression sickens me.
