Hello, my name is Drew and I just did a JDM TT Swap into my 97 RSP NA. I just found out my lack of boosting tonight after weeks of searching for a boost leak it ended up being one vsv hose not connected. Hey, I took it to 2 mechanics and they missed it too, lol. Anyways, now that I have it fixed I am WAY Overboosting. I have a 3" DP and Super Dragger Exhaust, and Intake. I also have a Manual Boost Controller I have yet to install. Will the boost controler fix my problem? Cause I really don't want to blow my Turbos, especially since I finally got them both working correctly.

I'm also aware of the restrictor plate in the DP. Is this the only way to solve the overboosting problem? Or is a combination of both restrictor plate and Boost Controller. I really just need to know what my next steps need to be. I'm not hitting any Boost Cut or Fuel Cut, and I have a Walbro 255 Fuel pump in it right now. Thanks. And if I need to search cause it's been discussed a million times, just tell me to piss off. :)

Hi mate and welcome. The boost controller will only increase, not increase boost. So that's not really something you need to install just yet. What is your boost at at the moment?? Im just a little confused as to why you think you are over boosting if your not hitting fuel cut etc... Im thinking at this point in time your gonna need a restrictor palate in there. Have you got one cat still in?? or arr both out??

Hi and welcome! :)

I think this was meant to read "The boost controller will only increase, not decrease boost".

Like terribleturner said, you just need a restrictor plate.

Most of us over here like to restrict the boost on our JDM TT's to 1.2 bar, when you fit a bigger bore exhaust and remove the catalysts then the boost will increase substantially. There isn't normally any need for a boost controller as it will only increase boost.

The best place to fit the restrictor plate is after the decat pipes(down pipes) as this will keep the build up of heat away from the turbo's .

When I fitted the restrictor plate it did keep it down to 1.2 bar, recently it's been going to 1.3 bar. I really need to fit another one with a smaller aperture, it's a bit trial and error really!

I'm surprised you're not hitting fuel cut though.

You also need to make sure you've got some decent spark plugs fitted or it could start misfiring.

Denso IK24's are good but not cheap!

NGK BKR7E(6097) are much cheaper but need to be changed more often, over here they're about 1/5 the price of the Denso.

It must get pretty hot over there at times, also worth making sure that your interccoler is in good shape.

I'm sure others will tell you more!

Thanks so much, and any more info is really appreciated.

Well, as far as fuel cut, who knows I won't let it past 12 psi. It hit 15 psi once and it scared the hell out of me. But I don't have a throttle ecu in this car. It's just the JDM ECU...if that helps at all. I'm sure I'm throwing a bunch of codes but it runs very well and very strong right now. I'm actually running an SP NA Built Tranny w/3800 stall. My mechanic had to trick the ECU in thinking that it was a TT Tranny.

But as far as the restrictor plate goes, if I take it to a shop (muffler) will they know what I'm talking about? But man am I excited I finally have full boost, I love it! Thanks again for the info....keep it coming. Here's a pic with it's sister.

I'm not sure if they will know what you're talking about, it's a thin stainless plate that fits between the muffler flanges. I'm not sure what size aperture you'll need .

Most of us on here got our restrictor plates from Chris Wilson, he's a member on here and is very knowledgeble when it come to the technical stuff.

He could either supply you with a restrictor plate or tell you the dimensions.

It's best to send him an email rather than a private message!

Two very nice cars! :)

15psi should be okay.. nice and fast ;) Fuel cut comes in after sustained (around 2sec) of 15psi+.

I haven't fitted an FCD yet so I have my boost alarm set for 15psi and it's a bloody pain. Every time I floor it on the motorway I have to let off when I see the red light :D

If you contact Chris Wilson and ask about the restrictor plate it might be worth mentioning that you're from Texas.

Not sure about the cost of getting one shipped from the UK , he might just give you the dimensions that you need!

I'm sure he won't mind me giving you his contact details, he's definately the person to ask. :)

Thanks guys. I sent him an email this morning.

So some of you are running 17 psi (1.2 bar) on these turbo's?!! Wow, alot of guys in the states bash the JDM Turbos and their fix for everything is to go single. Which I do plan to do but I want to enjoy what I have now for a bit. I'm also aware of the differences between US and JDM but everyone advises to stay low on the psi side with these JDM's. That's exciting....

Lots of people run 1.2bar on their Ceramics. Mine are actually UK/US spec steel turbos.
