icemanv6 Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 Lately i've got louder sound coming from near the engine when I release the clutch - It sounds like a bicycle wheel when a bike's turned up side down and you spin it, and you can hear the spinning noise. It's gotten a little louder now..When I press the clutch in slightly it goes away but as soon as I release the clutch pedal fully you can hear it again. Also at times when pressing the clutch pedal in and then releasing it I get quite a loud squeaking noise or like a metal cable is rubbing against something I had the window down and it sounds pretty loud, hope I'm giving some info from my rather bad explanation On a side-note anyone from yorkshire/humberside can recommend me a specialist nearby where I could take my car to get seen too? marbleapple Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 I have the same problem... Clutch bearing... My dad calls it the thrust bearing (god knows why). Im based in Leeds, if you find sone one good to replace yours please let me know. Most the mechanics I know know less than me which is bloody scary! However anyone got a rough idea of what kind of cost I would be looking at to get it fixed? I need to use my car this week, so as long as it's not a problem that's going to knacker the car anytime soon.... I was told to wait until the clutch goes as it takes a lot of work to get to it. My local garage wanted £300 inc parts and labour or £600 inc parts and labour for the whole clutch etc. With regard the above prices.... my garage are not really Supra experienced despite being nice blokes (hence I am looking for another garage) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
caseys Posted August 5, 2009 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Clutch/thrust bearing. IIRC it was about £55 from Toyota for the bearing and any little bits to install (not counting a new clutch itself). Biggesting clutch release bearing I've ever seen! That price was about 4 years ago though when I bought it EDIT: Oh yes, about 2-3 hours labour to sort. As others have said you may as well get a new clutch in at the same time. RPS street max or something like that, uprate when you replace where possible and budget allows I say In fact if I recall rightly I bought an RPS clutch from the states + shipping for about £20 cheaper than I could get a stock clutch from Mr T at the time. Guest bennyessex Posted August 5, 2009 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Im having my clutch release bearing done next week, its best to have the clutch done at the same time because you need to drop the gearbox etc to do it.... You will only end up paying to have it all taken apart again. Theres a good lad down here who used to work for a jap specialist if anyone down south needs a good affordable mechanic. If you've got an NA the decision I'd say is solely down to what comes cheaper - an RPS or an OEM clutch. If TT / BPU and goal is more torque/hp, then really uprate when you can, as you said the gearbox has to come back for it to fit so may as well whilst you're there. The price differential I got it at the exchange rate was a lot better than it is now. I remember the old bearing being an absolute b*****d to remove though so be prepared if DIY. Yer I have heard that, so I have decided to be on tea duty whilst my mate tackles the old one Well suprastore.com do it for £214 ex delivery + customs at the current exchange rate of 1.703:1 for the RPS street max In the UK the RPS is a bit more expensive at £500 odd. I think an OEM came in at circa £350-400. Been a long time so don't quote me on that one! Of course both will need the bearing etc. Just get the bearing from Whiftbitz or your local Toyota dealership. I'm already looking up and trying to find more jap specialist places in the Yorkshire area. I'm going to ring up tomorrow and try and get some quotes on what it would cost to fit a new clutch and the release bearing if there supplied, as soon as I know I will let you know where, what and how much By the way, are you still driving your Supra about, having any problems?
