Going to look at a supra this week

Hi I am going to have a look at a supra this week.

I am going to take the what to look for in a supra guide with myself.

And could anyone shed any light on a problem that the owner has told me:

The car stood since April, and wouldnt start, the owner tried charging the battery and to no avail.

Then the owner swapped the battery and it started, but then cut off after a few minutes.

The owner then tried to start it again, but nothing happened, and all the lights on the dash came up?

Any ideas of what this could be? Does it sound a huge expense?

OR is it a definite walk away?

Any information is truly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

The only thing that would immediately worry me is the "cut off after a few minutes" bit.

Could be just a shot alternator but may be not!

It would need to be close and cheap for me to look into it further.

Cheap it is, its around 150miles away.

How much and easy is it to get a new alternator?

No that didn't include fitting, I think from what i can remember i had the belts changed at the same time.

Right okay.

The owner said they had the pulley and fan belt changed earlier this year.

Is it sounding like the alternator?

if it was my first supra I would walk away from it. get one which is all ok and then you can learn from that one. And then you can buy a dodgy one to play with.

I appreciated your concern,

However the price at what it is at, is a must have.

I have read searched the forum for similar threads about the problem, but no answer has shown up.

Get it then.

Seriously, if you think it's a great price and are willing to take the gamble, buy it.

I wasn't willing to take a gamble, so one of the criteria of the Supra I bought was that the engine ran for more than a few seconds at a time...

Thanks for your reply,

I would just like to find somebody or anyone who seems like they have had this problem(my lack of info, as i havent viewed it).

The supra itself is sub 100,000 miles, seems in fair condition considering the price. Needs some tlc on some of the paintwork, but it will be my first supra.

The price itself is bang on £1k.

My car behaved like that after storage when I was not allowed to drive for a few months. After a lot of hassle and stress it turned out the petrol had "gone off". It was Optimax which apparently does this quite quickly

Oh right Alan,

Thanks for your reply.

I am taking all the points on board.

Is that an auto?

Try to get it to a garage or something and get it serviced. For that price a £500 service would be worth it for piece of mind.

Yes its an auto.

My plan would be to do that, or get a toyota specialist to come with me or arrange something for piece of mind.
