fessen
Hi I am going to have a look at a supra this week. I am going to take the what to look for in a supra guide with myself. And could anyone shed any light on a problem that the owner has told me: The car stood since April, and wouldnt start, the owner tried charging the battery and to no avail. Then the owner swapped the battery and it started, but then cut off after a few minutes. The owner then tried to start it again, but nothing happened, and all the lights on the dash came up? Any ideas of what this could be? Does it sound a huge expense? OR is it a definite walk away? Any information is truly appreciated. Kind Regards Chris
Scooter
The only thing that would immediately worry me is the "cut off after a few minutes" bit. Could be just a shot alternator but may be not! It would need to be close and cheap for me to look into it further.

How much and easy is it to get a new alternator?
TopgunTT
My alternator cost around £300 last year.
fessen
My alternator cost around £300 last year. Was that fitted. Does that sound like its something it could be? Regards
TopgunTT
No that didn't include fitting, I think from what i can remember i had the belts changed at the same time.

The owner said they had the pulley and fan belt changed earlier this year. Is it sounding like the alternator?
fessen
Anyone else?
pistonbroke
If the car has not run for ages and the battery has been changed, chances are the ECU has reset. A reset ECU takes time to re-learn values, and cutting out is not uncommon, especially if it's just sat there idling.
fessen
Okay thanks for that but how do you to about getting it to the stage of giving it time to relearn the values if it cuts out? Thanks

fessen
But it just cuts out few seconds after it starts which would give me no time to drive it
Steve
Have you tried holding the revs up at say 1500rpms?
pistonbroke
You said earlier it cut off after a few minutes, now it's a few seconds?
fessen
Sorry it was a slip of words. I haven't viewed the car yet I've only got the info the owner has told me. I guess upon viewing I could try that yes.
mark newman
if it was my first supra I would walk away from it. get one which is all ok and then you can learn from that one. And then you can buy a dodgy one to play with.

I have read searched the forum for similar threads about the problem, but no answer has shown up.
martini
I appreciated your concern, However the price at what it is at, is a must have. Get it then. Seriously, if you think it's a great price and are willing to take the gamble, buy it. I wasn't willing to take a gamble, so one of the criteria of the Supra I bought was that the engine ran for more than a few seconds at a time... Thanks for your reply, I would just like to find somebody or anyone who seems like they have had this problem(my lack of info, as i havent viewed it). The supra itself is sub 100,000 miles, seems in fair condition considering the price. Needs some tlc on some of the paintwork, but it will be my first supra. The price itself is bang on £1k. AlanM
My car behaved like that after storage when I was not allowed to drive for a few months. After a lot of hassle and stress it turned out the petrol had "gone off". It was Optimax which apparently does this quite quickly
martini
The price itself is bang on £1k. Is that an auto? Try to get it to a garage or something and get it serviced. For that price a £500 service would be worth it for piece of mind.
