Corsa Hunt Idling

Recommended Posts

I have a 2nd car, a '99 Corsa 1.2 16V as a little run around to teach my wife to drive.

Problem 1

The ECU light came on once or twice under load and I could hear detonating. The mechaninc replaced the, and I quote, "Air Mass". Nice. That solved the ECU light and det.

Problem 2

Hunt Idling. Intermittent issue, when stationery the car goes from 800'ish up to 2000rpm and back down repetitively. I told the mechanic about it on the first meeting, but he seems to not remember this and is now saying it's a new issue. I had a look through the car history (it was my wifes mums car since new and all receipts from the same garage have been kept). He's now replaced the "Mass Air" twice and apparently changed the "Idle Control Valve" before as well, but swears hand on heart that this car has never had idling issues?? hmmmmmmmmm....

I told him that when I'm gearing down and slowing on approach to a traffic light the car actually still accelerates due to the revs going up. He said this is normal. I know it's not.

Any clues on how to troubleshoot hunt idling would be a great help so I can sort this out without ever having to speak to this man again.

Cheers

Mark

Its a vauxhall what do you expect... they are full of problems...where would i start?

Get hold of a scanner or a tech 2 and go from there!

Could be vac pipes from your egr valve, tps sensor, throttle body clogged up, air leak on the inlet manifold gasket, throttle body gasket split, tps incorrect signal, lamda sensor, coolent temp sensor...the list goes on.....Remember if it is an air leak the engine will try and compensate for it and will go on a learning process...

Do the revs go up, i.e. the engine holds a high idle for a few seconds before calming back down? If so, I have a long shot suggestion: this happened on my 1999 Fiesta. After cleaning the idle control valve several times, it turns out the problem was due to a power steering electrical wire being corroded and breaking the electrical circuit. This caused the engine to think you were permanently trying to turn the steering wheel, and raised the engine revs to compensate for the power that that the PS takes away from the engine.

Unlikely to be the cause of your problem, but just a thought... :)

Cheers for that, I'll have a look.

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks chaps. Just before I went on holiday it died :( The engine cranks over but doesn't take. Haven't checked spark or fuel as I think the guy who claims to have fixed it can do that. I'm in no mood to start fixing things he should have... Getting it towed over on Thursday.
