MarkR
I have a 2nd car, a '99 Corsa 1.2 16V as a little run around to teach my wife to drive. Problem 1 The ECU light came on once or twice under load and I could hear detonating. The mechaninc replaced the, and I quote, "Air Mass". Nice. That solved the ECU light and det. Problem 2 Hunt Idling. Intermittent issue, when stationery the car goes from 800'ish up to 2000rpm and back down repetitively. I told the mechanic about it on the first meeting, but he seems to not remember this and is now saying it's a new issue. I had a look through the car history (it was my wifes mums car since new and all receipts from the same garage have been kept). He's now replaced the "Mass Air" twice and apparently changed the "Idle Control Valve" before as well, but swears hand on heart that this car has never had idling issues?? hmmmmmmmmm.... I told him that when I'm gearing down and slowing on approach to a traffic light the car actually still accelerates due to the revs going up. He said this is normal. I know it's not. Any clues on how to troubleshoot hunt idling would be a great help so I can sort this out without ever having to speak to this man again. Cheers Mark
Carl_S
sounds like a right hunt to deal with - good luck on getting the horsa *unt situation sorted.

MarkR
Hmmm, mine is intermittent and fairly annoying. Might try fix it myself by buying a few bits and replacing them.
SUPRALOOPY
Can you pinpoint when this happens and also have you had it plugged in and real time logged when the problem accours? Sounds like tps? is it fly by wire or mechanical throttle? Remember this is a vauxhall and could and will be anything. where abouts are you? Dave. movistar
Its a vauxhall what do you expect... they are full of problems...where would i start? Get hold of a scanner or a tech 2 and go from there! Could be vac pipes from your egr valve, tps sensor, throttle body clogged up, air leak on the inlet manifold gasket, throttle body gasket split, tps incorrect signal, lamda sensor, coolent temp sensor...the list goes on.....Remember if it is an air leak the engine will try and compensate for it and will go on a learning process... MarkR
Thanks guys. I'll have a look. I've only just got the car from the wife's mum, so haven't even taken a proper look under the hood yet. I also need to go through the receipts and see what has been done in the past.
stevie_b
Do the revs go up, i.e. the engine holds a high idle for a few seconds before calming back down? If so, I have a long shot suggestion: this happened on my 1999 Fiesta. After cleaning the idle control valve several times, it turns out the problem was due to a power steering electrical wire being corroded and breaking the electrical circuit. This caused the engine to think you were permanently trying to turn the steering wheel, and raised the engine revs to compensate for the power that that the PS takes away from the engine. Unlikely to be the cause of your problem, but just a thought...

Konrad
Sounds like dirty throttle body, spray it with carburetor cleaner holding revs at around 2,5k, it should cough few times, throw smoke cloud and hopefully sort hunt idling (it does help with similiar issue with my MX5). Dave
i had this in my saxo so changed the maf sensor and stripped the throttle body cleaned it all up and the icv now it runs sweet
MarkR
Thanks chaps. Just before I went on holiday it died The engine cranks over but doesn't take. Haven't checked spark or fuel as I think the guy who claims to have fixed it can do that. I'm in no mood to start fixing things he should have... Getting it towed over on Thursday. SUPRALOOPY
Crank sensor? or cam sensor. could be both being a vauxhall..lol
MarkR
Already replaced the crank sensor... Hmmm, might try the cam sensor. Thanks.
SUPRALOOPY
TBH. If you do not have diagnostic equipment to hand you are chasing your tail and replacing parts for no reason. Have you tried the vauxhall owners club forum for info? might a bit better than here. Dave.
MarkR
I'm pretty much leaving it to the "mechanic" now. He was trying to sell me a load of bull about gearboxes sensing your speed and adjusting your throttle for you... on an 11 year old 1.2 corsa... I think not...
