Gearbox query...

Just a thing that has been bothering me a little...

I have been interested in buying a Supra for a while... But I had made the descision to go for an auto based on the fact that i had heard the gearbox was a little poor. I was told that the box was the same original box that was developed for the MKIII with an extra ratio and they had reliability problems... Now i hear that it is the EXACT same gearbox as in the Skyline R34... Is this true or is it just another Getrag? Surely there would be no extra couplings for the rest of the drivetrain etc...

Can anyone shine a little light on this matter? If it is the same box then it opens the market when i finally get the loan sorted...

I've put a response on the skyline bbs as I saw the q there first....

but the answer is its very much a Getrag unit...capable of handling more power than the average engine can throw at it.

You'll really need slicks and about 1,000hp to break it....

but to get there the clutch and flywheel would have to be upgraded

There isn't really a definitive answer to this, different people like different gearboxes.

Branners has owned one of each, and reports very little difference.

The best thing you can do is go to JIC and take a few long test drives in each to find out which one is best for you. :)

As for the Getrag, well Titan in the US, have a Supra with 1100rwhp+ with drag radials, 9sec qtr mile times at 170mph+, and the only bits of the transmission that are breaking are the clutches and propshafts! :D

Cheers matey... I think there would be more control with the 6 Speed and a little more fun... looking to do 1 or 2 trackdays in it when the sun comes out next year... Heard a guy was struggling round Castle combe earlier in the year with the auto... Like you said i may take a drive down to JIC and have abit of a test... dont really want to be cheeky though because they are out of my price range... motors are going on the autotrader for £3/5K Less... I know they warranty it etc but surely that goes out the window once you start modding...

I echo the advice given; you have to try them both for yourself.

I have driven the 6 speed, the Auto and the tiptronic box. I opted for the auto because I am not the only one driving the car. The auto box is an amazing box and can take some serious power before requiring upgrade. The power delivery with the auto is excellent. One of the quickest MKIV in the UK runs an auto box. There was a reply in a thread made by CW recently and he commented on the excellence of the power band of the auto box. AFAIR can’t find it so can't post link.

I did not go for the tectonic as it only comes on the VVT engine and that is more expensive to modify, but it was fun to drive and absolutely effortless to rip through the box.

The six speed was fun, but easy to select the wrong gear at the bottom end of the box if you are in a hurry i.e. on the strip. I think one or two others have found this too. I have heard the six speed box described as agricultural on several. Not how I would describe it but made by drivers of many cars and years.

I duck now and get my coat.
