Boost controller help?

Hi all,

I've just brought a used HKS EVC4 boost controller for my supra, its a Twin Turbo with 2nd decat. I've fitted it all and have tried to up the boost on it to 1.2 bar, but it doesn't boost over 1 bar no matter what i try. I'm pretty sure that i've set this up correctly.

I've set the lower setting to 1bar and the high setting to 1.3 bar but still only boosts at 1 bar, the car is capable of make way more than one bar as previously have had a manual boost controller on the car and run it at 1.3 bar quite happily at Santapod. Recently I started getting boost spikes to 1.4 - 1.5 bar hence looking for a Electronic Boost controller.

I've tried a mates HKS controller on my setup and that does the same. Could it be the stepper motor?

It might not be a great idea to be running over 1 bar with the first cat still fitted mate, i would imagine it would generate quite a lot of heat in the exhaust.

Have you fitted other bpu parts already such as fuel pump, fcd, colder plugs etc

Hi mate,

Yes I have a Walbro fuel pump, FCD, Iridium spark plugs and a aeromotive FPR. I'm going to get the cat taken out but this still doesn't answer the question to why the car isn't making boost with the boost controller fitted?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Which boost source is the BC taking its reading from?

boost source is from the main pressure pipe that goes to the orignal valve, so no problems there. boost controller is set to 1.3bar but as soon as it hit 1.01 the displays starts to flash and will not make more boost than that. i have fitted my known working controller unit and its the same problem.

Try swapping your mates solenoid to verify if yours is working or not. It sounds to me as it that could be the problem.

As a footnote but is there any chance that a boost leak is present in the piping?

i have mis-placed my solenoid somewere after removing it due to going Aem ecu.

its not a boost leak as makes alot more boost with the solenoid bypassed. just strange as to why the display starts flashing after reaching 1bar boost.

ps have checked all wiring and pluming to the unit/solenoid all ok.

One of the features of the HKS EVC bc's is the Boost Warning feature: you can set the warning threshold to whatever amount you want (up to 2.0 bar) and if boost exceeds that level the EVC will blink and beep, and will instantly return wastegate operation to stock levels.

That's pretty much what you're describing (blinking)?

Have you modified the Boost Warning?

Mate, what kind of boost pressures were you running with this unit before I brought it of you? I'm still not able to make more than 1.0bar?

As mentioned we've tried another unit on my setup and also double checked all the pipe work today to no avail?

I think the stepper motor my be knackered? Hoping Abs will find his to test this theory.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Want to get this working before Suprapod :(

It was running 0.85bar with the warning boost set to 1bar. The solenoid was holding 0.85bar very well on my car. By reading the manual it seems that they're quite awkward to setup on sequencials, did you do the wastegate auto learn setup or manual setup? Does the offset setting make any difference? It did on mine!

It holds 1 bar on mine fine, i think the stepper motor hasn't seen anything more than 1 bar.

You not suppose to do the Auto learning mode on the twin turbo setup according to the manual?

The Gain did move it from 0.95 to 1.1 bar but 1.1 bar takes a very long time to achieve.

If no one else has any ideas, im going to have to run a manual bleed off valve.

Tried everything mentioned on that page but still no joy

I think the stepper motor is broken or not able to hold more than 1 bar of boost.

Cant believe i'll have to put the bleed of valve back in for suprapod.

Anyone want a broken boost controller?................I thought not
