Near Crash..

Nearly Crashed my Supra about 2 hours ago (still getting used to it)... coming off a round-about about 5 minutes away from my house (after an un-eventful 1hour 50 minute drive before hand).

Now I normally drive as safe as possible in the wet but basically I over-powered too much unintentionally and got myself into a lot of bother!

1st Exit coming off the round-about, was as I forgot, sharper then I remember, over-powered when nearly straight in 2nd, back end started going quite badly (had stopped raining but road was very wet), and my car was all of a sudden veering towards the metal barrier on the side of the road. Half-Corrected by powering out over-corrected by turning too much, then found myself going towards the bush/hedges on the opposite side of the road straight on, didn't want to try to correct back out as my reaction was not having enough time as I was pretty much going straight on into the hedge anyway, and didn't want to risk sliding the car even more right into the curb sideways..

Anyway, ended up completely spinning the car 180, managed to get the breaks on as soon as I realised I had spun too much and was pretty much screwed.. Luckily, I actually ended up facing directly the other way perfectly on the other side of the road almost as if I had done intentionally! Stopped in-time before coming into contact with the curb, grass or hedge, which I was quite bemused about..I think the fact the road is very wide both side's is what saved me from going into it.

Luckily I always drive back relatively late on a sunday so the roads are empty... so no one was near behind or infront of me if it was busier I think i'd of been more aware and careful in the first place to have not been in 2nd gear still.

So I learnt a valuable lesson this evening about driving in the wet with a RWD car without luckily doing any damage to myself or the car..

anyone else here had a few close-call encounters in the wet in there Supra?

Leason learned.

I did something similar after getting annoyed at taking a wrong turn. Booted it out of the junction and 180'd and hit the kurb pulling the tyre off the rim. Then snapped a stud removing the wheel.

But that was in the dry and going up hill :p

What tyres are on the car? Also get a propper alignment done. Both my NA and my TT have never been skittish in the wet. The only car i'v had the back step out was a 1jz soarer, and that had silly fat tyres on the back :p

Lucky guy!

Few weeks ago i landed ON the crash barrier. (used it like a ramp)

I drove very careful but it was just too wet :(

Luckily nothing big happened. I landed on my Nurspec which is now a bit destroyed. But its okay :)

Yep, did that a couple of times when I first got my RZ. Nearly ended up side ways when the 2nd turbo kicked in driving in a straight line in the rain! Another time went round a corner a bit too fast and came out the otherside snaking it 100 yards down the road. Also spun on a roundabout on ice. Managed to miss everything each time, although the roads were pretty empty. Had a cheap set of Yokohama Ecos before. Got some Pirellis now which help, plus I've got used to the rearwheel drive. :D

Driving down the M40 the heavens opened. Was on the outside lane doing about 70 ish when I saw a big puddle stretching across my lane. Took my foot off everything and coasted over it only for the back end to aquaplane around like crazy. Managed to grab it after a hundred yards or so.

Bit of an arse twitcher that one lol

There are a lot of variables, road surfaces can be greasy in parts which car drivers don't tend to be able to spot in general, but if you ride a bike you'll be fully aware to specifically looking out for these patches.

Also a 'quality' set of tyres is a must on any car, especially a high performance car.

iceman: what brand of tyres do you have on the car? Make sure they've got plenty of tread.

Yokohama DNA Ecos on the car, 235 on the front and 255 on the rear, however there is plenty of grip on them (on everyone)

I just checked the rear-side passenger tyre and it has a small 'chunk' (best word I can describe it has) kind of cut out a little..I'm wondering if I did clipped something last night which has caused this :(

Can't get a picture of the tyres at the moment due to parents having the digital camera on holiday, but i'll be using the other car for the rest of this and next week anyway. Will try to get pictures up next monday.

Do you have a phone from the past 5 years? A photo from that might do the trick if so ;)

Yokohama DNA Ecos! That's what I had!! Recently put some Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's on the back and have been properly planted on the road ever since. They make a big difference.

How much did the pirelli's set you back, what size?]

My mate had some jap tyres on his RX-7 and he said they were really bad in the wet also.

Basically I just over-did it, probably because it was so quiet on the road and I was only 5-10 mins from my house and nearly paid the price (I had the back twitch before nearly on the same bit of road but that was also due to doing exactly the same thing but the road was same conditions) I'd been through puddles and everything else on the way home, was raining nearly the whole journey and never had any problems basically after last night learnt to always drive the same on my journeys especially in the wet, regardless of where I am!

However if I can afford to get some new better tyres at a reasonable price then that's what I will try to do asap, but I won't be using the car hardly for the next 2 months if at all, need to keep the mileage down on her. (get paid again in a few days and saved some of my loan I got for any extra running costs I might incur! :) )

I have had mine go in the wet when I first brought it.

Your luckier than the chap in Ipswich today, He came of the A14 onto the A12 and spun his beemer 3 series into another car then the central reservation. Did lots of damage.

That does not sound pretty hopefully no one was serious injured? :(..what kind of speed was he going at when that happened do you know? I guess I was lucky that it happened to me at a relatively slow speed.

They're 18" 265 on the back and the Pirelli P-Zero Rossos where £355 for 2, which seems the going rate as I shopped around a bit. I used to slide all over the place (partly on purpose :eyebrows:) with the Yoko's, but driving out of the garage with a new set of Pirelli's felt like driving with a baby elelphant sat on the back, was properly glued to the road. I was amazed how much difference a good set of tyres makes.

Ok thanks for heads up :)

Was it just the rear tyres you replaced, not all 4?

Just the rears. Plenty of tread left on the front (still Yokohama's). Had an MOT due and the back tyres were practically slicks. They were held together by about one thread when I rolled into the tyre place, but I had sort of planned it like that......had a bit of fun the night before *snigers to himself*. I found it was always the back that stepped out rather than the front, probably 'cos of the weight of the engine and my lead foot (hehehe). I did think the Yoko's were a bit slippery though, even before I minced them.

I was on the other carraige way queing for the roundabout so can't tell exactly as I wasn't behind him. but at a guess 40 ish. It's a fast bend onto the A12, you don't need to stop as the lanes are seperate and merge around the bend. In the supe i can take it at 60 in the dry with plenty of grip.
