OK first off a massive thank you to Supraloopy for his help on the phone what a great chap...

Well my Speedo failed on the way back from the ACE cafe meet then started reading in KM then MPH then failed completely and now is intermittent between Total failure and whichever unit of measurement it likes!! :(

After removing a lot of the dash and a couple of calls to Dave I finally found the converter unit.

First location clue..... found under the original wire rapping from the dial plugs.

Now you don’t see it......

image

Now you do!! :)

image

Right under the heater control wires.

Ok well trace the wires back....

image

Wait what’s this…. there going the wrong direction :( arrrrgh :taped:

image

Where else would you splice wires other than right under the dash at the back in the most impossible location!!!

image

Right well looks like I will have to remove the dash to do a proper job.

Question one: anyone got any guides / photos / how to's for full dash removal? (help)

Question two: have i got the following right??

image

1. Earth

2. Speed return (to the ECU)

3. Live

4. Speed input (to the clock)

1. Live

2. Earth

3. ?

4. ?

5. Speed input?

6. ?

7. ?

8. ?

9. ?

Help please guys

I'm going for dash removal tonight and will be posting picks but any tips and tricks would help.

Thinking of doing a Paul Whiffin and fixing the loom to the shell for easer dash removal in the future.

Thanks.

John

That looks OEM to me! I'll take a look at a loom later, don't go ripping stuff out yet. That blue tape around those spliced wires is also OEM, they are all like that. Looks like it's nice and clean, can't see any aftermarket wiring on there.

Edit - Yep, it's OEM and part of your dash loom. Do not take that out!!

Sorry for abusing your thread but:

Can someone post a Picture of a stock cluster wired?

Without converter or anything.

I want to remove my converter but got no idea where to rewire the old cables.

Don't worry I would not slice anything up without advice hence the thread. ;)

So the little box I found is definitely the converter then???? :search:

If it's not I’ll scream!! :taped:

Still the wires go behind the dash and not to the Speedo???

Going to need some big help here me thinks!

If the wires dont go to the speedo then its not the converter.

Converter output goes to speedo and odometer.

Just follow the wires from the speedo and c where they end

I think you need to follow your own advice!! :p

The wires have been followed and nothing??? :search:

I’m not stupid when it comes to wiring I have done several high end £4k+ ICE installs for friends and previous cars I have owned. All my work is soldered and heat shrunk with connectors in place for removal of parts as required after install to eliminate any cutting of wires to remove panels and avoid using bullet connectors (EEEEWWWWGH).

There are some bullet connectors in the car ATM from previous owners these will be replaced with professional connections ASAP, however it is a bit more important to get the Speedo working right now. :p

The converter that was in place has failed and I must remove the old one as the signal gets completely cut off so any SENCIBLE suggestion of places to look and what colour the wires I am looking for will be appreciated. (this includes the identification of the wires coming from the speedo) So please :help: like I have asked thanks.

OK. The speed converter is usually mounted somewhere behind the dash panels (behind the odometer unit or speedo cluster or somewhere in between), but you probably already knew that. The cheap DSC units often look like a piece of thick chewing gum with 3 or 4 wires coming out of it. Don't expect any writing to be on it, they're often unmarked. It's just possible that it could be mounted beside the ECU in the passenger footwell, but this is less likely.

You could follow wires around the loom, but that sounds tricky, especially when you get to the points where the wire you're following joins up with 30 other wires to form a loom trunk!

It could also be underneath the gearstick surround.

Thanks Steve  very logical and exactly the course I have followed, I have tried as below. I think pictures will help I will get these on tonight after work mate.

All panels except the main dash surround have been removed this includes: both glove boxes, all dash panels, stereo and ABS unit gearbox surround rear arm rest console thingy, carpet around the ECU, ECU cover ect ect. (pictures after work tonight).

ECU has been uncovered wires have been checked.

Wires at the gearbox have been looked at this lunchtime can’t see anything there.

I’m at a loss really, and getting frustrated! :(

John, that box you posted is 100% not the convertor. Looking at the speedo wires it doesn't look there is one fitted, if it is, it's not wired in a traditional place.

Have a look for any spliced in connections on the ODO unit.

ODO?? you mean inside the odometer?

This connector and wire spur?

I can’t see any spliced wires on the loom back from the speedo to the ECU. Mind you I’ve been looking so hard for so long I’m going wire blind!!

I would still like to know what the wires are coming out and going in to the back of the speedo connection???

Looking at the wiring diagrams the first two are positive and negative.... I’m getting a feel for the others (red/blue should be from the speed sensor or back to the ECU I think) but I’d like to know for when I wire the new unit in.

Supraloopy is coming over Friday to have a look, bloke is a legend. :)

In order these pictures go round the loom from the ECU to the clocks and down to the gearvbox....

The first one spotting the speedo converter or assisting in its precice location will receve £20.00

You're looking in all the wrong areas. It doesn't look like there's one fitted at all, although there is some non-OEM wraping on the ECU wires. The other stuff you've pictures is all alarm related.

You need to have a *really* good look at the following plugs and check for splices, primarily the Speddo plug and ODO plugs.
