I hope its tru but surely the garage and the mot test cventer should know?

I'm 2 hours away from the car mate so I can't get the vin number, and my v5 is at my parents which I won't be goin to until tomo

A car that is manufactured from the 1st August 1992 will require a Catalytic Convertor more stringent emissions test, and will require a Catalytic Convertor to pass that test (rev the ass off it for several minutes to heat up the cat, and the reading is taken at the same time).

A car that is manufactured prior to this date (older) can be tested for emissions on the older more leanient emissions test (forget the ratings or allowance), but its tested at idle only.

There is a loop hole around the switch over between 1992 and 1993 cars, which simply is if the MOT tester cannot find the specific car on the MOT Emissions listing when they do the test, they have to test the car under the older more leanient emissions test.

Hope this makes sense.

In additon....

For example if you put an older engine block into a car that is newer, this will allow you to side step the higher emissions test too.

I used to own a XR4X4 1992 on a K plate last of the line car, which was registered on the 1st August 1992 hence needing a Catalytic Convertor style test.

I went to my local Vehicle Transport Testing Facility (close for me, up the road) as I converted the car to a Twin Turbo using a 1991 engine into my 1992 car, and then didn't require a Catalytic Convertor test.

The testor will search for a match and follow a flow diagram which they all have to do by Law (recall its section 4.2 or something like that) which details the decision process for the MOT testor.

If they cannot match your car to the database as mentioned above the older test is conducted.

So if reg plate age and vin code dont match its tested at 'older more leanient' levels?

Yes, if the tester cannot match the exact model of the car, engine etc then the car must be tested on the older emissions listings.

They will follow a flow diagram and it will instruct them to do the older test.

Hence for me when they looked for a Twin Turbo 2.9 V6 XR4x4 on a K plate, there is no such car from the factory.

Perhaps the same is right for a Single Turbo Supra, as that was not an option from the manufacturer.

Either way you will want optimuim fuel burn, and closed loop lambda control is the best way for performance hence why I then fitted the newer Lambda control to my older engine in the XR.

Best of both worlds then no strict MOT test, and better fuel economy and performance as long as it doesn't run lean of course.:D

I thought there were differnt laws for imported cars?

As far as I am aware a import has to be returned to standard if it is 10 years or younger for SVA etc.

Once someone has completed the import of a car and paid for an SVA for these shores it can be imported as a first into the country (as the car wasn't sold here originally, other than UK obviously).

Once a car has been put through this process and a car is 10 years or older it can be imported without the need for it to return to the factory specification.

Hence why you always see lots of Modified cars coming into the country once they are 10 years and older.

I don't think Japanese stuff will be any different, if they can't find an exact match then they have to adopt the older emision style.

I am pretty sure this is correct, I know it was for me in my circumstance as explained 'As I actually did it' and checked it all first.

I believe your best option is to make a trip with your details to a Vehicle Testing Site VOSA site, they will have all the details by law for emissions.

They are also specialists in testing vehicle for example like people who build kit cars etc...;)

Cheers mate, its close but not quite there yet, another hurdle I have to try and get over!

Just hope I can get this sorted soon and back on the road, already know there Is a few changed I have to make to get optimum performance but I just want it back and will worry about that at a later date!

The bit you put about toyota never made a single turbo could be interesting and a loop hole? How has other people managed this tho?

My girlfriend used to work in the motor trade and said there are a few ways to geyt around the emissions test! I want the same! Lol! All adds up getting ryan back again ect

If you get stuck Lee, there's a garage in Ilminster that im quite friendly with that im sure would be lenient on the emissions side of the MOT... they let mine through with no cats in a couple of weeks ago. ;)

Although obviously that would mean getting the car back here without an MOT so i'd imagine you will want to get it done local to where the car is .

You don't need a cat test bud. Imports weren't covered in the testing till 1995 (hence why the flow chart leads you to the older test).

I've had to explain this to just about every tester I took the MR2 to, its a PITA.

Glad to see you coming to the end of the road.

When I was a tester yes you do, the engine code shows up when you put it in the computer!!! We tried every way round it (legally).!!!;)

I don't understand this. It's been covered on here many times that pre 1995 import information isn't held on the database. The information for the UK supra will be there but obviously there are differences between the UK and the Import.

as dude says, every mot place i have asked said if the engine code is on the computer it needs the full test. the 2jz code is there so it gets the test, import or not :(

As I put before it seems the only thing its doesn't need because of its age is the fast idle test, still needs the emissions

I can't believe there is such a grey area regarding this with some people able to get around it!

The gf said once before some people log the details intop the system but then use another car to do the test? But that does sound a bit dodge

Could you not just find a "friendly" tester? :innocent:
