meal replacements?

...i had bad stomach aches if i had milk...

...but my stomach didnt like the shakes AT ALL, i had very bad cramps and ended up bringing it back up within an hour of taking it. Now this may have been due to the fact my diet was so poor, but it was a shock to the system and put me off them instantly.

I then decided i would try the natural approach, so i stared having Soya milk, this seemed to work great

Sounds to me like you're lactose intolerant mate. Try to avoid everything dairy, you'll feel a lot better, and cut out a lot of fat!

I was comparing Soya milk to regular milk, 250ml serving of soya milk compared to 200ml of regular milk. The larger serving of soya milk has less than 50% of fat, salt, sugar, and calories than the regular milk! So being lactose intolerant FORCED me to be healthy... How about that!

I took vitamin supplements for years, and at industrial doses, but I now believe that the average person shouldn't touch them with a barge pole. There might be a case for L33, because his diet is so poor, but for anyone with a reasonably balanced diet they're worse than pointless.

For longer than I care to admit, I fell for these marketing claims:

1) Strength athletes need higher levels of vitamins and minerals than normal mortals

2) RDAs only tell us what is the minimum necessary to avoid disease, not what is optimal, so we can have better health if we take more than the minimum

3) Vit and minerals are a good 'insurance policy'

4) The average person is deficient in many vita and minerals without realising it.

There is NO convincing evidence for any of these claims. They are there for one reason only: to encourage sales.

In the last decade, vitamin and antioxidant supplements were tested by cancer researchers in at least two massive, careful, long term studies. The supplemented group showed such increased mortality that one of the studies was partially abandoned. The worst culprit was beta-carotene.* It's news to many people, including some doctors, that this is the case, but the evidence has been out there for some time.

As for 'good quality' vitamins, I dare say that some companies do produce a better quality product. What worries me is this: how can you tell? Can anyone honestly feel a difference when they are on a vit supplement? And if not, how would you know whether you're buying a 'good quality' vitamin? It's not as though there is a lot of independent testing going on.

* Vitamin E decreased prostate cancer, but increased death from strokes. Also, the studies were done in smokers, but it's not unreasonable to extrapolate to non-smokers.

well after reading all of this i have been making some changes! ive started the meal replacements yesterday but i have a shake for breaky, then another as a mid morning drink. then lunch at work i take a home made meat sarni, like chicken breast and a apple. i tried making my self eat a banana but every time i swallowed i urged and brought it up, i did eventually eat the hole thing tho but think i will give them a miss from now on!

found i really like innocent fruit smoothies, so been having one of those a day to get extra fruit.

been eating a few jecket potatoes but mixing it with weight watchers pasta mixes and some rice with mixed vegys, if i add a bit of red sauce i love it! :) at least it has vegys!

also relised i love cottage pies, again veg in there! so i have been trying more foods and liking a few. going to start trying salads and just making my self get used to it!

been doing extra exercise too, i box monday and wednesday but now go for runs tuesdays and thursday.

as long as i keep this up i recon im on the road to recovery! have noticed my belly aint quite used to it yet tho and have visited the toilet ALOT :( might be a lot to do with the shake as well tho, its a maxi muscle diet so more like laxitive i expect! lol!

hoping to see some good fitness results in a few weeks, boxing season starts in a few months so i want to be ready and in shape to start getting some fights :)

Good work mate, glad to see your making progress. You will find that the shakes give you an upset stomach at first, but you could always take half the amount it recomends for a while until your body is used to it, then work up to the full amount once your ready. Like i said in my other post, im not a huge fruit or veg man but thre are plenty of other things you can eat that are good for you.

i will see how it goes for a couple days, but the one i had for breaky i could of gone a day i recon with out food i was stuffed! lol!

looking into healthy eating and i cant believe the price, a tiny 330ml bottle of innocent smoothie is like £1.50

yet a nice sugar filled bottle of coke is under a quid!

surely the manufactured stuff would cost more to make, and fruit just grows on trees - FREE? lol

I cant decide if i am or not to be honest mate, i can have normal milk in tea or coffee, and i eat cheese, yogurt and other dairy products with no problem, it just seems to give me dull pains and cramp if i have alot of milk. But like you im using soya milk most the time now anyway, and as for the fat, ive been keeping an eye on what i eat lately and try to only have fatty foods every now and then.

I used to like the innocent smoothies, but the price put me off buying more. Now i have Sainsbury's own fruit juice. It's a lot cheaper, and they usually have it on offer too, so you save even more. Comes in some nice flavours too, try them, see if they work for you.

As for the lactose intollerance, you may have a high tolenance level, so you can have small amounts of milk, but too much sets you off?

Cheese hardly has any lactose in it, so cheese isn't a problem for me, but yoghurt is a no no. There are soya yoghurts, but soya stuff is expensive, so I just give it a miss. Can't say I miss it really either.

Glad you're doing well tohugh dude, keep it up

I would stick with the bottle of Coke, didn't they do some sort of research on those smoothies last year?

Iirc, they were deemed to be bad for you, as they are full of sugar and (blah blah blah) I can't remember the exact details but may be worth having a quick look.

I'd expect them to have a lot of sugar... They're made from fruit

Coke on the other hand is a nice blend of chemicals!

Just take the safe bet and stick to water! :p

It is cheaper to buy the ingredients and make it yourself, I usually buy my fruit and veg from a green grocer as they are very cheap, I could make about 10 strawberry smoothies for £5.
