Fate, who believes.

Whats peoples take on this topic, do we have a time to do something ie live or die, i know its a strange question to ask but ive just had an in depth conversation with someone( close person) who thinks "they" and people around them have times in their lives when certain things will happen, i personally don`t believe in fate and think it stems back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They had godesses known as the Fates, who controlled the destiny of men. As such it falls more into the realm of superstition, maybe?

I believe in fate to some extent and believe some things are meant to happen i.e destiny.

I mean for example, i remember reading some time ago about a non smoker and healthy fitness instructor in his mid to late 20's who died from an heart attack while having a little jog one morning.

This must have been fate/destiny to some exent.

Or an underlying heart weakness..??

Fate?, of course.

Like the woman who missed the Air France flight that fell into the Atlantic a few weeks ago, only to be killed in a car crash a week later

:(

Final destination esqe??

I have a view on this. I do believe that peoples lives follow a certain path. I have had dreams that I have been stood in a certain place or having a certain conversation and then maybe months or years later, they have happened.....

There will be all kind of explanations for strange events and people have over active imaginations but generally I believe that we do have a fate or destiny..!!

Great discussion though!

I find things like this facinating. I dont know if any of you remember but I posted up a while back about my engagement being on the rocks and eventually we ended things and I was very upset and felt like I had lost a soulmate and vice versa. The girl I am currently with at the moment I met very randomly and was a wonder I even met her at all but somehow did. I had been in Camden all day at a music festival and had been drinking with freinds throughout the day. When it got to the evening we kinda got separated from one another and I was just with my mate Jamie from work who likes a drop of ale and had had a bit to much and was wasted. Needless to say he got turned away from the music places we wanted to go to becuase he was to drunk. So I was hacked off obviously but didnt wannna just go in and leave him on his own + didnt know where everyone else had got to, so decided to head home. On the way home my mate nick txt me and asked if I wanted to go out. I told him I was on the train and wasn't sure as I was in a foul mood having to leave london early becuase of my mate being drunk. When I got home I was well not up for going but though F-it and phoned him and said lets go. That night the girl I am now seeing had a very similar dilema and wasn't going to go out either but thought sod it and went along as well and we met that night and hit it off. It was weird too as I saw her and had an overwheling urge to talk to her....there was just something in my head that was saying "you have to talk to this girl" so I did and the rest is history. Were soooo similar and have a real connection , so I kinda see this as fate saying we would meet each other on that night

I had a similar experience when I met my now wife, I was in the forces and one friday evening I was going to my room to chill and watch some telly when a mate of mine badgered me to go to a doctors party. I wasn't really up for it but he insisted and I relented. Anyhow we got there and it was the most boring party you could think of so we both decided to get wasted.

Late into the evening the doctor and all his friends came in and I spotted the woman who looked stunning and started to talk to her. We hit it off straight away even though I was slightly the worse for wear and spent a couple of hours talking to each other, I even had her friend standing behind me waving her arms asking my wife is she wanted help in getting rid of me!!

Anyhow that was in 1991 and we are still very much in love. Fate or destiny, call it what you may, I believe it. If I had gone to my room to chill rather than force myself to go to the party I would not be here today.

I've had some interesting episodes over my lifetime, some good some bad, that on reflection could be construed as being connected to each other. Situations I've found myself in that have led to advancement, events that were unexpected that have led to meeting strangers I've come to love etc etc. I think if you live long enough there will be a whole string of 'happenings' that could be considered as a result of, or connected to other 'happenings'. I don't think its fate, just coincidence and serendipity.

Considering how most of us spend our entire lives within a very small localised area of the UK, against the vastness of what the entire world could potentially offer us and our futures, perhaps educational / financial / geographical influences play more a part in our destiny than any mystical force.

It's irrelevant.

Higher dimension dwelling beings who are omnipotent/omnipresent/omniscient can see all of what we know as time, so to them it would already be written, ie: fate.

We unfortunately cannot see all of time, we can only see the present and can record what we believe happened in the past, so our actions do change our own future because of how we live within a timeline.

But it's irrelevant whether we can change it or not, because to us it hasn't happened so we don't know if we changed it or if it was set out before us.

I remember being a silly kid in my youth and with a group of friends took my mates dads car for a drive while wagging maths mock exams!

I wasnt driving but 2 of the lads started arguaing over who wanted to sit in the front seat (being only 15).

After about 1/2 hour one of them forced his way in, prior to this the car wouldnt start (toyota celica beilieve it or not)

and when finally got it started went 1/2 mile down the road and it died out through some water in the ford.

A guy driving past in a range stopped and towed us out to the side of the road and told us to go home.

Being excited kids we eventually got it started again and about 10 mins later going round a bend at approx 50-60 ish the bonnet came flying up smashed the front windscreen and hit head on in to a big tree completely writing the car off.

My mate who fought for the front passeneger seat had all the sharpnel from the broken glass stuck in his face and was pi$$ing blood everywhere.

We did do a runner but ended up handing ourselfs in to the police as my mate was taken to hospital and required some serious stitiches and was scared for life with a 7 inch scar going across his forehead, eyes and cheek and we all felt guilty.

Now we all belived that it must have been fate why he ended up in that seat and the guy who had jumped in the back was so shocked that it could have been him.

We did get signs all day not to drive the car but somehow believe we were meant to as we did and have learnt a serious lesson and we were all lucky to walk away with minor injuries.

I mean this is just a short summary of events that morning, but we couldnt find the keys, then handbrake was siezed on, not starting, had a puncture, died out in ford and so on and being 15 not mechanically minded we still got the car running because it was fate and was meant to happen?.

Well put tbourner.

Ewen, I wonder what serendipity means..

Serendipity, the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.

An example being your avatar Carl. It reminded me of a character in a film, so I searched and when I found out who it was I watched the film (one of the the air traffic controllers in Airplane) and had such a great laugh with my wife that that night I got the best screw since I took her to see Cats.

I used to like the concept of fate. It was exciting and mysterious.

But now?

Well, what with millions of people dying every year of thirst, starvation and disease - are we saying this is their fate? - B*ll*cks :)

Ah, what about doctors saving babies born with severe disabilities, who normally would have passed away quite quickly. This would have saved them from a lifetime of pain and suffering. Is this their fate or one imposed on them?

Is the thirst starvation and disease caused by others? Take Africa and the millions of pounds poured into the continent, misappropriated by corrupt governments, money that never reaches the ordinary citizen. Is that their fate or one imposed on them?

Hmmm...I've got to nip out now for a weeks holiday. No really. I'll come back to this. :)

I didnt believe at all until it happened .

Basically my Mum should have died but due to basically a series of un-believeable and totally miraculous people and timing she was saved in the nick of time . Looking back at the incident and how it un-folded still to this day makes us all think twice about things. Maybe it was all just a big coincidence but bloody hell it was some script :)
