kill1308
People join them for the same reason that you are here chatting about something like this... If you are here and not chatting about Supra's then you are the same kind of person in my opinion. Not everyone uses facebook to say "look at me" - "look at my status update" I use it as an extra way of staying in touch with people and having a laugh, it's a social thing that allows you to interact with your friends on an additional level, not instead of phoning them or seeing them. marc_p
I have Facebook but ony go on there 3 or 4 times a month, I mainly use it as a way of communicating with the other half of my Family in America and a way to collect and distribute photo's from car shows etc.

Aweegin
lol - http://failblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/fail-owned-myspace-fail.jpg Wahahah.. I bet someone believes that too.. Yeah, it's been said already.. facebook is just an additional way of stayin in touch. Do as much or as little as you feel.. Personally I like it for keepin in touch with folks/friends you just don't see that often..found a few I'd just lost contact with over the years for whatever reason. Friends/family who live over seas.. Even tho you may call them, or email.. it gives you the chance of a little interaction and banter with friends of friends too. The old fotos you/your friends put up that you haven't seen in years.. Up to the school reunion that was (relatively) easily organised a couple of weeks ago via its interface. End of.. it's just what you want it to be.. randomly keep in touch..to the folks who seem to use it as a diary, forever updating their status..(tho i dont use it.. that's how I understand Twitter to be.. for folks who feel the need to give a running commentary on their lives.) Use it..don't use it.. it's no biggy really
stevie_b
http://www.unspecific.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/2zz3zwn.gif And NSFW... Loving the Venn diagram! I'm on facebook, but not myspace or twitter. I use facebook to occasionally keep up with people. As Gaz said, it does work if you just treat it as a tool I only go onto it maybe once a week. It certainly doesn't rule my life, far from it. I use it to chat to friends who I don't get round to phoning. I don't generally upload photos to it, I don't play 99% of the weird "applications" or quizzes that appear on it. I definitely don't update my profile much at all. My life isn't interesting enough to make that worthwhile: that's not self-pity, it's just an observation. Neither, I regret to add, are the lives of most of the people who *do* update it every x hours. I doubt whether anyone would be interested what I had for lunch, or whether I'm going to the gym tonight. Most of the hype surrounding them is, I suspect, due to people using them as little more than an SMS tool. When those people get bored of the website (as they do, quickly), then the hype dies down
Carl_S
You are right I don't give a damn what you had for lunch last night, or whether or not you went to the gym. Really I don't care one iota, not one bit, trust me on this Stevie. It really doesnt matter to me at all. OK? Now what did you have for lunch? And did you go to the gym last night? JustGav
Well, I hate social networking sites such as facebook, BUT have recently setup a twitter account. Nasa have a twitter feed and it is nice to see what is happening without a HUGE article sometimes, sort of like a news flash. That said I don't have any followers as I keep deleting them and I only follow 2 people (Nasa and astro 127 at the mo)
Ark
I'm with Steve - I think it's a load of old... Waste of time - if you want to be in touch with certain people, _be_ in touch with them. Posting like a twit or whatever you call it isn't being friendly with your friends Collecting "friends" you don't know and will never meet is just sad. JamieP
I like facebook, i dont post crap on mine or other people walls etc but it is good for talking with old mates/girlfriends ive not been in contact with for years.
Branners
I am not alone in the world (perhaps we should create a Facebook group for people who hate facebook, or is that an oxymoron?)
Mike
I'm on all of them... probably most active on Facebook. It's just a way of keeping in touch with friends and old school/work mates and seeing what they're up to. The Twitter thing is a bit odd.. I keep getting followers that just post links to porn sites
Ewen
In my experience, they are a great way for young people to keep in touch with each other, using someone else's broadband account.
