JustGav
Does anybody know of any decent sat nav software which will advanced route planning. IE putting say 20 destinations in and it will calculate which is the optimum route to cover them all in and return to base, not necessarily in the order which they were inputted. JustGav
Won't Google maps do that? Just tried it, and it does a top down approach sadly, unless you know of a different option setting?
Guigsy
im quite sure you can put in more than 1 "via" destination in google. but for some reason google maps for me is horrably slow for me so i cant test it. edit - ah. well its close. you might be best off just roughly working it out and then fine tuneing
Gaz6002
Just tried it, and it does a top down approach sadly, unless you know of a different option setting? So what you're looking for is a software which takes in locations and gives you the optimum route to take them all in? I've not used Google for that. I used it to plan a few of our European trips, but I used it along with a simple map of EU roads and did the hard bit myself, joining up the dots. Yes I can put in multiple vias, that isn't what I'm after. I need some logic system that takes a list of points, and calculates the best route between them all. For instance if I use normal vias for (newbury, thatcham, hungerford, thatcham, reading, thatcham, newbury). Most sat nav software would calculate that as EXACTLY the above. What I need is something that goes (newbury -> thatcham(1,2,3) -> hungerford -> reading -> newbury)
JustGav
http://www.whatsatnav.co.uk/systems/garmin_quest2.html Hmmm, this might be an option The route planner function allows you to save up to 50 routes. The unit will also auto-sort multiple destinations to provide the most efficient route. If you have to make multiple stops on your journey, program each location in to the Quest 2 and let the software calculate the optimum order in which to visit each location. jevansio
If you want to do a little digging I think the problem is commonly referred to as "The Travelling Salesman" problem and is a commonly used to test students in computer programming. Gaz6002
The Garmin SatNavs have always impressed me - give it a try! I'll be interested to see what you think as I need to find another SatNav soon as my current Garmin is a little bit old now.
