The infamous wheel.... What is it like now, still eerily quiet? It seems odd seeing people in that picture with the wheel.

It is very quiet there indeed. No bird songs, tons of mosquitos and creepy silence. I think i need to photoshop those 2 out, they destroy climate of a place :p

looks like a hot blond in the cabin in the last pick! hope your missis does not spot that you got her to pose right there at that point!ha!

One in cabin came there in a company of very unfriendly looking monkeys with Berrettas and small guns behind belts. She wasn't pretty, just fit :) Dragunov kicks like hell, but my lady seems to fall in love from the first sight and now she is browsing for opportunities in local gunneries :O It seems that Dragunov is not classified as dangerous weapon in Poland and sports gun licence is enough to own one  :eyebrows:

congrats. I am very jealous of your recent

endevours in the ukraine. I too would have loved to fire that particular weapon, maybe at a ripe melon. I have only fired it before virtually in a computer game called project igi, where it did a fantasic job.

Eastern bloc is great for doing things like that. I considered the whole mig flight thing, but bailed because I am too timid.

  • 7 months later...

I tought I could bring it up as moderators of StrefaZero.org confirmed that they can sort out access to Zone for foreigners (read UK citizens). If there will be enough of interest in this, I might translate schedule of a trip and go there with UK group (I'm planning to visit Prypiat eithere at May or at autumn (less green stuff around to cover town :) ). Give me a shout if you are interested so maybe we will put something together.

Cost is around 270 pounds for transport, food, rooms, access to Zone. 1 full day day on your own in Prypiat included :eyebrows:

Trip starting from Warsaw Central so good connection for those who are going by plane from UK.

I'm very interested in this. Would love to go.

Would it be over a weekend or how many days roughly?

4 days i think, when Konrad sorts out documents etc i think it would be a good idea to test the water of a MK1V trip over there, if we have enough interest

In short:

22:00 going out from Warsaw

Day 1 17:00 - 19:00 coming to Slavutych (town next to Zone)

Day 2 full day around the Zone, visiting area around Reactor 4 and others, Tchernobyl town, Kopachi village, 3 hours in Prypiat.

Day 3 - full day of free roaming in Prypiat :eyebrows:

Day 4 - we are moving to Kiev, it might be that guys will organise something like I had last time - shooting from various weapons (cost 25 dollars)

Day 5 - free roaming in Kiev till 16:00

16:00 going back to Poland

Food from coming to Slavutych till breakfast at day 5 in Kiev is paid for. Everything is dirty cheap to buy anyway if you fancy trying local cuisine :p

I am looking at going myself, I find it really interesting. Disturbing how many people have died and how little we really heard about it.

Theres a very good documentary (about 1.5 hours) at the link below which is worth a watch.

I have the book Chernobyl confessions of a reporter by Igor Kostin who also features in the video above, some amazing pictures in there.

If others want to arrange something to visit one day I would love to go, not many of my friends would be up for holidaying in an area with high background radiation, instead preffering a pint and beach action.

From what I have read abour researching trips fewer tour operators are willing to let people walk freely due to the state of the buildings, I would love to see the swimming pool if you can still get access, ferris wheel and the vehicle graveyard although I hear thats mostly restricted now. Amazing to think people went back there to strip radiators off walls and rip engines from vehicles just to sell for scrap.

Vehicke graveyard is closed for public from 2008, but there is quite nice one behind Police Station. StrefaZero is not strictly tour oprerator, it's group of scientists from Polish Atomic Society, main guy is working in experimental polish reactor "Maria". Those trips are organised as a scientific visits, so we have more time and more freeplay around Pripyat. Of course, entering buildings is not allowed offcially, but if you do not stumble on rare police patrols you will be prefectly fine. If you hear vehicle approaching, just hide and wait for them to pass :p

Shall we start a list of possible people who want to go?

Maybe we can look on the net for tour operators unless konrad can recommend other companies or even hook us up with the scientists :D

We need to start the ball rolling asap as i want to go asap :D

If I will have list of people who are SURE they will go, I might have a chat with StrefaZero guys and make it happen for a few of us at autumn time (probably September or October). I'm positive me and my missus are going.

@Edge

Most tour operators will be waste of time, you will be far better off going with scientists or private group of people who know where to knock to get passes.

Is that kiev hostel any good? do they arrange passes?

I see they do pub crawls and ak47 shooting.
