adi
Am i right in thinking that if you have an auto that there are pipes going to the main radiator for cooling the oil? Having never really looked at my a/t set up i thought the oil cooler was a seperate part. Looking at the EPC it appears that the tubes go from the transmission to the radiator and back again. SO when i buy a new aftermarket rad i need to specify its for an auto? It may turn out that the only rad i can buy is a manual one, so is one of my options fitting an oil cooler for the transmission? Are these coolers universal or do i ahve to get one specifically for my car ? Help ! cheers adi
Guest Martin F
You are correct in nearly all counts. There is a cooler\heater at the bottom of the radiator on an auto Supe (MKIII or MKIV) and on the MKIV this then goes into a further cooler. If you can't source an auto rad aftermarket then its fine to use a manual one and supplement this with a seperate cooler.
adi
Cheers, were would this attach ? i presume it would be air fed and be seperate to the rad.. or would it somehow be plumbed into the water line?
Guest Martin F
Well it would attach to exactly the same pipes as the integrated one. The integrated has two jobs in that on start up it will heat the fluid to allow for quicker\better performance of the box and then once the car is up and running it will cool the fluid as well. Obviously you won't be able to achieve this very easily with a seperate oil cooler and most people don't worry. You just need to realise that the fluid in your box may take slightly longer to warm up.
