2012 Solar Maximum Could Lead To Disaster (Long Thread Warning)

The sun might kill us all -

a) in a few years time

b) in a lot of years time (when it expands and engulfs the Earth)

c) in even more years time when it dies and becomes a black hole

Ok, I heard b and c somewhere else, but you get the gist.

Until then - get the cigar on, it has, as LBM said, been good. :)

For c to happen the sun will have to expand to a point where it cant sustain itself and then implode creating a black hole, but before it implodes it will consume the galaxy

Don't you mean the Sol solar system?

Nope,

Well in a way yes, but with the milky way and andromeda galaxy merging creating the Milkomeda galaxy, granted its not due to start untill the next 5 billion years the sun may jump earlier than the rest of the planets and create massive devastition.

So if our sun does go nova or a corona causes the burn out of a planet than gravitation forces could rapidly devastate the galaxy, it would all depend on how far the sun does expand and if the gravitational forces pull in other planets from the neighbouring solar system and could make a chain reaction that might not stop.

But more than likely it will only effect our solar system, but if it happens we will probably never know the final result

The first two posts of this thread remind me of a time, a few years back, when I watched an edition of Horizon (or was it Equinox?). I was on the sofa then. It was more comfortable than this chair but they were the same experience all told.

This is old 'news' and well, it'll happen or it won't. Personally I'm hoping that Cumbre Viejo slips into the see and launches a Tsunami at the US. It seems like a much more media-friendly disaster scenario.

I may be wrong but ive never come across this theoryof our small sun consuming a galaxy, our solar system most definately. B & C are pretty irrelevant as at our current rate of development this would long ceased to have been a worry for mankind assuming we are not extinct already. The actual posting point is however a very real problem, but no one knows when this pheonominom is going to happen on a problematic scale.

Its a small sun now but when it goes nova it expands and consumes everything in its path, so it wont be small then.

And the only way the scientists think the sun could destroy a galaxy is when the 2 galaxies i mentioned merge into one, which will happen.
