It had the best tip box I've had the pleasure of using, it changes gear exactly when you tell it too, not 5 seconds later like more recent newer cars I've driven. Actually mine is for sale, which hopefully I will get round to putting on eBay. They are brilliant cars but you need to find a good example, most are very reliable and as mentioned about the MIVEC models can suffer from problems as they spend a lot of their times being worked hard to get the best out of them (think VTEC from Honda). The only thing to go wrong on my FTO Is the heater matrix and I have had it 2 years! Its the GR model with the tip box and as mentioned above its amazing autobox (esp as its triptronic). Here is the model line up (might want to copy and paste this to you friend): GS (1.8 litre non-mivec - cheap insurance and parts) GR (2.0 V6 non-mivec - cheaper insurance and parts than the GPX with nearly the same performance) GPX (h2.0 litre V6 Mivec - Highest performance, all electrical goodies, styling and most expensive insurance and parts) GPvR 2.0 litre V6 Mivec - Highest performance, most expensive insurance and stripped out racer style interior with very nice rear wing!) The model your friend is looking for...here is more information: Model: FTO GPX Transmission: 5MT, FWD Engine: V6 2000cc MIVEC DOHC 24 VALVE Power: 200BHP @ 7500rpm Torque: 20.4kgm @ 6000rpm 0-60: 6.8s Max Speed: 149mph So not really that slow considering its engine size! Few things to check when viewing an FTO: *Noisy Tappet's. *Central Locking problems. *Noisy rear suspension (Worn anti-roll bar bushes). *Rattling glass due to badly adjusted/worn window guides. *Poor brakes, standard discs prone to warp very easily. *Feeble battery, slow turnover, dimming lights on revving. *Faulty air conditioner, recommended to be operated weekly as it *is self lubricating. *Badly done de-restriction on Tiptronics can cause 'unusual' behavior. *Non-MIVEC cars being passed off as MIVECs. bigbloodyturbo Posted July 16, 2009 Share Posted July 16, 2009 When I was looking for my previous car I wanted a honda prelude or something similar and I looked at FTO's. They are slow. A vti prelude with 10hp less would spank it. Allthough I did notice they had a nice exhaust note. pistonbroke Posted July 16, 2009 Share Posted July 16, 2009 With regard to the tappet issue. The non mivec has hydraulic tappets, regular oil changes will keep the engine sweet. The Mivecs have adjustable tappets which obviously require adjustment. Camskill used to be FTO specialists and believe they still stock and can get hold of all the parts needed for the car. Guest arond Posted July 16, 2009 Share Posted July 16, 2009 Hello, ive read most of the comments about the FTO, im the 1 who's looking to buy it & im in 2 minds now weather to go ahead with buying it. The problem i have is the guy im buying it off wants £1795 for his 1998 FTO & wants £250 + my 1999 golf GTI MK4 which i know is worth £2200 all day long as its in mint condition & had alot of money spent on it. Ive liked the look on the FTO ever since i was a teenager but never had 1 due to the cost of insurance. I saw this 1 advertised on pistonheads & fell in love with it for its looks & wanted to know more about the car before buying it. My Golf is slow so the FTO MI-VEC will probably be a fast car for me & ive never had a car over 170bhp. Can any1 give me some advice on what to do or what you would do if you were in my shoes? If I was looking for a 2-2.5k car I'd be after a good s13 or shabby s14, maybe a gen4/gen5 prelude vti or an mr2, even an na supra as they are coming up pretty cheap now. I hated it and fortunately so did she. Performance was not good, it was cramped inside, and felt cheap and horrible. Possibly yellow if you like bright colours? I'd drop the asking proce of your golf to around £2k and take an offer of something there abouts. A Teggy will set you back around £4k. There's not much extra to be had out of the B18c without spending big money. You don't get UK cars in yellow or silver (only facelifted JDM afaik) so it would just be red, championship white and black if that's what you wanted. A 98spec (facelift) JDM will set you back £6k+ generally). I'd choose the teg all day over pretty much all cars in it's price bracket but then I'm a bit biased there.
