Guest gfrererr13
Hello, I have my JDM N/A 5 speed that I will be adding my turbo kit to within the next 2 weeks or so and origionally I had recieved information that you cannot do a 6 speed swap with the NA.. But recently I have found information stating that they made 6 speed NA's starting in 96.... has anyone tried to accomplish this and if so what all was needed besides the tranmission and all the parts to go with that? Is there any fabrications that would be needed? Also the information I have found said the V161 will work but did not reference anything about the V160.. is there any difference in the 2 besides the gearing? Would there be anything that would stop the V160 from working with the 2JZGE? Thanks! Robbie
MarkR
As far as I know both the V160 and the v161 will work in the NA shell as far as fittings are concerned. I believe the flywheel is different, and you'll need to get another diff and propshaft. I was going to buy an NA with the 6speed v161 to use as a donor for my 6 speed conversion but the only part I could have used was the gearbox. All the rest needed getting from a proper 6 speed. Guigsy
IIRC geerbox. flywheel, clutch, and prop. Im unsure about the diff tbh. Theres also one other bit which i dont remember. And an ecu?
MarkR
Tlicense / Homer are the daddies on info about this. Do a search. They've pretty much mentioned all this on here before.
Homer
It is 100% possible to do this I don't know about that Mark, but from what I've found you'll need: - Box (v160 or v161, either is a direct fit) - Clutch - Flywheel - Gear shift from 6spd Now it gets a little more complex.. what diff do you have fitted now? If it's a large casing diff then it's a direct drop in. If it's a small casing then work is required...You'll need the front half of the prop shaft from a 6spd. The clutch slave and system is the same on all models so no changes are needed there. What is your current diff? A V161 is closer ratio than the v160 so on an NA diff it would be pretty horrible to drive.
Guest gfrererr13
Thanks for all your replies! I am excited for this now... I have always wanted a 6 speed and as funds were not avail at the time of purchasing the car I will hopefully be able to do this down the road! I am currently running the stock Torsen diff because well thats what was there when I got it lol would that mean its the large casing diff or the small casing? So it would be recommended to get the V160? Is it just the gear ratio that is closer that would make it worse and how come that would make it worse? I apologize if these are dumb question but the diff is the one thing I am not terribly familiar with and dont know much about yet.... Thanks! Guest gfrererr13
Oh and as for the ECU will that need to be changed? I will be running the Greddy Emanage Ultimate for a while then upgrading to the AEM EMS (more than likely will have this once I can do the tranny swap) will that be needed? MarkR
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=2363577#post2363577 Have a look at this for the ratio's etc. ---------------------- http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=41702 This will work out what diff you have. Guest gfrererr13
Ok so I checked the code on the car and it is the Torsen LSD that I have...
MarkR
I have the same one on my V160 and TT. Not bad but the gears are a little short.
Guest gfrererr13
Ok perfect.. so that probly means that I wont have to worry about upgrading that if I were to do the swap sounds like?
MarkR
Hmmm, I'm not convinced. I feel the gears are a little too short but it won't kill you. 6th is an issue at 70mph as it's not normally on boost with longer gears, but now it is slightly in positive boost area, so using more fuel. Great for a track though.
Guest gfrererr13
Im not so much worried about the gears its more the strength of the Getrag is what I am going for.. The W58 is pretty strong but i was thinking it might be easier to do the Getrag swap then worry about rebuilding the w58 and it would be a PITA if it blew then I had to wait... lol thanks for all your help!! Guest MattyRixz
So, with my 95' 2JZ-GTE turbo coupe... I can just dump the six speed right? as 95 GTE's predate the 6 speed?
