cheekymonkey
This is so far off topic it's not even funny but I thought I'd advertise this here in case. I have for sale a Quantum ATL M1500 Tape library with an SDLT tape drive installed. It's a 20 slot model. I have this on eBay so take a look, and get in touch on the club if you're interested or know someone who might be. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160345453050 Oh BTW the price in the ebay auction is just a guide - I'd probably let it go for anything over £400 to a member as I'm just not getting much interest and its taking up room. It's a fairly specialised peice of kit so if you don't know if you need this or not then you probalbly don't! I used it at home for my NetBackup system running on Linux if anyone cares James
caseys
Wow now that's some serious storage kit for home usage! You have a Netbackup system running at home? Just beta testing some data de-duplication kit myself now (though not for home). Nice little bit of kit and useful for anyone that wants to keep a lot of data or offsite it. I bet JustGav would have it if he had the spare cash

cheekymonkey
Yes I run NetBackup at home - I worked for Veritas for a couple of years supporting it when 4.5 was the current version. It looks after all my home data and it's also a testbed for when I need to try things out (I'm contracting as a Netbackup person now). Replaced the SDLT library with a Scalar i500 (2 x LTO3 and 30 slots) which should last me a while... streaming to tape at 70Mb/sec is very nice - even though LTO3 can support much higher throughputs, I don't think my server can! JustGav - what VTLs are you using? I have a Falconstor VM running on my laptop running their VTL software, and I work for EMC with their repackaged EDL version. Glad to see there are some other storage geeks on here!

There are plenty of closet ones lurking about... I've been looking at Datadomain's software, simply because I want to try the dedup stuff. I need a cheap way of backing up 4TB

I need a cheap way of backing up 4TB I've not used Datadomain but I may look into it especially now that EMC have bought / are buying them. Hmmm a cheap way of backing up 4Tb? Well these days you can store that on 2 hard drives as you know but it just depends on the requirements - and how quickly recovery would be required! Sounds like it's for a business though if you're looking at Dedupe tech

I have a 2nd small machine which wakes up at night and does a sync and then shuts back down...(Not elegant but it works) And nope, not business, it is a home system. I would imagine for a typical home system most data wouldn't really be duplicated to an extent where de-dupe would work very well - unless you're doing something quite specialised! Sadly there's not really any better way of doing it without spending mega money. This is something I've noticed over the years - the massive growth in hard drive capacities haven't been matched by the technology that would allow said drives to be backed up. I remember my mum using a 40mb tape streamer years ago which was more than enough to back up the entire hard drive and tapes were cheap. What do people do these days? In my experience - not a lot, data loss seems to be part of everyday life.

Using block based dedup it isn't too bad, the returns aren't as high as I expected so I've not really progressed much with it. SIS style dedup wouldn't make much difference as you say though. Most home users really just don't bother and then moan when they loose data... This is the reason why my raid5 NAS is just synced off to another set of disks. It is a bit silly having 8TB of space and not being able to use it all, but I don't fancy having to recover/write off that much data.

A lot of people's rationale for not doing one of these is that they do the other. At the moment I have 4 x 1Tb disks in raid5 for 3Tb usable which is plenty for now. However when I installed the OS I accidently selected raid0 the first time round and nearly fell off my chair when I performed a read speed test - over 400Mb/s! Getting about 250MB/s now which is damn good though
Abz
Ahh loads of geeks I believe lurking on the forum, we use Veritas for archving out Mailboxes in the firm I work for (because we dont like pst's). Good Luck with the sale, very good piece of kit! Would be very useful for a small\mid sized business!
