sprag5
This happened to mine and it was the battery as the negative connector was loose hope that helps
dacky20
ive just been and checked the connections again and they are nice and tight the positive could be tighter but its well gripped on the connector !
stevie_b
My bet is the starter motor contacts. You don't need to replace the whole starter motor, just buy the kit that Toyota sell for refurbing the contacts. Kit is approx £15? I'd guess it's an hour's labour for a garage. There's a sticky on here about it somewhere. Here: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=51682&highlight=starter+motor Does this sound familiar? : http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=70712 Edited July 13, 2009 by stevie_b (see edit history)

stevie_b
Any Toyota dealer will sell you the kit. The part number(s) are on the sticky I linked to.
dacky20
ooooh yes ive got it now thanks ! ive found a full reconditioned starter motor and wundered if this would be better if i was going to take my car to a garage ? the full unit recondition is only 25 pound wt do think ? Geo
I had the same problem, turns out it was the contacts in the starter motor. I bought the Kit, and the garage fitted it. Once installed car starts perfect. £15 is a bargan for the refurb kit.

I would just get the refurb kit from Toyota. I'm sure any decent independent garage will be happy to fit OEM parts you supply, especially as they'll be obviously brand new. The rest of the £25 starter motor might not be any better than your current one, and you don't know how long ago the contacts were refurbed on that. Do double-check the price first though. Guest Garfy
its an easy and surprisingly nice job to do, do them yourself, it only took me about 1.5 hours start to finish
caseys
Wunderbar! So did you go for the motor or the refurb kit?
Guest Tayousei
+1 vote for refurb kit. Took me and my brother like 2hrs, mostly due to difficulty reaching the top bolt on starter under car... Cheaper, more fun, satisfying knowing you keep your original equipment and works like new again.
Guest Garfy
I did the refurb kit, did it about 2 years ago, and its still working without fault
adnanshah247
get a hammer and whack the starter motor worked for me!
stevie_b
The hammer is OK for a get-you-home fix, but it'll need a better fix some point soon. If you really want to use the percussion method, I'd use a rubber or wooden mallet/hammer rather than a metal one.
