Tuner Wheel Nuts - Problem when they fail

Rob Dublin

Recommended Posts

Only mounted the wheels twice but 2 of the nuts cracked on me when taking them off. Luckily one still came off but had to drill the other and now have to replace a stud. Couldn't get a weld onto the nut either. Nut just expanded in the bolt hole and made a mess of the paint finish.

Anyone had similar issues? Don't think the nuts were the best quality (the key was starting to torque twist) but even so, really don't fancy bolting more of these on if the same could happen again while stopped on the road with a puncture in the pouring rain.

Pics below of the nut that survived, other one was cracked much worse.

dont know if you were using one mate but you really need a torque wrench and tighten the nuts on the low side of what Mr T states, i also NEVER let any garage monkeys near them with a pneumatic gun as this is a dead cert to over tighten them

second that, and i use copper slip to lube my nuts, the misses never complains about my nuts being stiff

Bear in mind taper nuts may need a very different torque setting to the insert nuts the stock rims use. Those nuts look like they are made of utter junk unless you gorilla'd them up.

Definatley didn't go ape on them, only used my body weight by hand on an extender bar.

Need to buy a large torque wrench now... no one said Supra ownership was cheap!

You should easily achieve a suitable torque with a standard length 1/2 inch drive ratchet handle. I had an MR2 in the other week, even the air gun wouldn't remove the wheel nuts, so out of curiosity I put a torque wrench on them. Most broke free around the 280 ft lbs mark, a couple went to 300 ft lbs and over. Crazy! I see this quite a lot, people seem to thing tighter is better with wheel fastenings.

103 Newton Metres is the recommended torque, that's about 76 foot pounds. A standard half inch drive ratchet handle is about 12 inches long. If you can't pull on it at 76 pounds or more you need to have a word with your quack, even I can manage that, and believe me, I am not fit :) Double it to a two foot extender, and you only have to pull at 40 pounds to over torque the things. Start jumping up and down on it weighing 150 pounds and you have the 300 ft lbs plus I see on lots of cars :)
