stevie_b
I know this subject is a hardy perennial, but I'd appreciate some advice please: I'd like to set up a home CCTV system with, at most, 4 cameras (probably more like 2 or 3). I already have an IP camera that sends data to a standalone NAS drive. The problem is that both the camera and NAS are cheap units, and aren't really up to the job (camera picture is poor, and NAS periodically hangs and needs rebooting). I'm torn between setting up a conventional coax-based system recording onto a PVR, or perservering with an ethernet-based system. I'm also not sure whether to go for permanent recording, or motion detection (and this might affect my coax vs ethernet decision: for example is ethernet generally better at doing decent motion-detection than coax?) Another factor of course is cabling. It would be a big advantage if the camera signal were wireless. I already have a wireless network (with spare hub ports) at home. This uses WPA2+PSK, so if I go down the ethernet route I'd want cameras that support this level of encryption. I've had a look in Maplin at their products, but I'd welcome some real-world opinions / experiences from yourselves.
JustGav
Carl0s on here I seem to be remember used to do this, he may have some ideas... Wireless cameras aren't too bad. bignum
You`d be better going coax or even cat5/ballum into a standalone dvr with say 250gb which would give around 2 weeks constant recording then if you want to view over the net link the dvr to your router, setup the port forwarding and atleast then your not relying on a pc.I have a good supplier if you need equipment. stevie_b
Thanks guys. Gav, I'll pop round sometime to have a chat about this and catch up if that's OK. I can't make this weekend though... Bignum, have you got the contact details of your supplier please? It might be too high-end for me, but worth a go.

Carl_S
I set up a cctv system outside my mothers house. It got rusty after years of disuse and I took it down. My advice is if your neighbors do not have cctv then don't install it. Also unless you have classified highly sensitive data or millions in jewlery at home don't install it. It will breed the opposite of what you want and waste time. Might be fun to set up though.
