Temporary heater bypass ? and sad calliper news

Hi new here, hope it's the right place to post for advice.

Just took my mkiv NA import to have pads changed and following hours and frantic phone calls have just located 2 new fron callipers to replace the ones that 'failed' when they did the brakes. Have just read an interesting post, through searching, on knackered callipers due to over-tightening the bleed nipples. I think that's what they did but can't prove it so i've just had to fork out £500 for callipers as I need them tomorrow a.m. Feel v p......d off and extremely poor, should have done the brakes myself but didn't have time.

So that's a problem I couldn't get help with. But here's one that someone might he able to offer advice on. I had wet carpets/loss of coolant/no heater (big clue) and on searching the posts have decided that my heater matrix must have gone. Seen the great step by step on how to replace but haven't got time yet (or the courage) but I'd already put in radweld (bad move?) and it stopped leaking - this was about 4 months ago and sadly I just forgot about it as at the time I had a look and decided I just couldn't get to it and the garage quote was unbelievable. I'm about to embark on a long journey to France and want to bypass the heater in case it decides to leak on the way. Does anyone think this is a very bad idea! I was thinking that I could temporarily connect heater inlet and outlets with a bit of copper pipe and some clips. I'm not technical enough to know if this is sensible or not, it just seems to me like a sensible idea? Any comments? I know I should deal with the problem properly but I don't have time as I am already booked. And does anyone know why I can get a passenger side brake hose with relative ease but not a driver's-side one? tried four places! One place didn't even list a part no. for a driver's-side one?!

Great site, wish I'd found it sooner....wish I'd done my own brakes ..... wish i could afford a newer mkiv.

Mine failed and i ran it with the pipes connected as you say for over 6 months.

Some say its better to block them off others to by pass. no one really knows which way is better i just know i ran mine bypassed with bit of copper pipe for over 6months.

sorry to hear bought the calipers, the calipers on the NA are the same as TT's question is whtther you had the jspec ones or UK spec ones. Jspec ones on here are often given away or sold very cheaply so shame you couldnt hold out!

Thanks for that. Confidence and moral v low after calliper shock. How would I know what spec? It was imported in 93 (3l NA aerotop) and i've had it over 10 years.

Hi Clueless,

Thanks but the car is stuck at the garage (no brakes!) and is meant to be driven to another for the timing belt tomorrow as I go away Monday, so I really had no choice but to go to Toyota - couldn't get them anywhere else by tomorrow..........Unless there's any chance you can DHL them for tomorrow delivery by 9 a.m.?! Obviously at my cost! I don't know? do you think it's possible? How can i get information to know if they are the right type? I'm even wondering if its worth me driving up tonight, except that i'm in london! Mipps

Thanks for the info, sadly new ones are now on, couldn't wait. Can't see supposed crack on one, the other is definitely knackered.
