Getting rid of a Virus

depends on the virus. Literally anything can happen.

Branners the reason i suggested wiping everything is because that is what i would do. Viruses tend to hide in files that you use and disguise themselves as documents etc. Backing up the files would only be a door back to infecting the computer again.

I'm pretty sure i could be classed as one of those geeks you mention and i would never just remove a virus hoping for the best. At the very least i would remove it, check it with a few independent scans, backup the REALLY important stuff and then reformat to be on the safe side. When putting the backed up items back in they would be getting scanned again.

If the stuff isn't critical then wipe it and take it as lesson learned.

This isn't good. Kaspersky alerted me of a Trojan on that 3rd party scan I was doing, I clicked delete, and I got an 'Access is Denied' message come up and the computer screen went blue then turned off, it's restarted and seems to be ok again  Called an our usual I.T guy who we can't get hold of :(

may not be a virus, in my experience the best bits of kit ive used for finding crap are SpyBot and Adaware. they are very user friendly. Then there is HiJackThis but you have to know what you are doing. If Kaspersky isnt finding anything install AVG for a little while (remove it when done if you want) .

Ive never had to wipe a HDD after using them 4. one machine I found had 58,000 infected files lol!!!

That's the thing though, Kaspersky is finding it, but when I try and 'disinfect' it, it just goes mental and everything shuts down! It then comes back on, finds it again after 10 mins and the same thing happens!

Now got hold of the I.T guy who can only come tomorrow at 10. Thing is if I disconnect from the network I lose the interent connection too, which means I can't do any work and I'd have to go home.... hmmm :D

So.. it's a win win situation.. Now where's my virus disk.. :sly:

I really hope it can all be sorted as it's my own personal laptop too. My fault for using Mininova and not reading the comments on the torrents. Kaspersky has just found the 'Backdoor Torjan' yet again, so I'm about to shut down :( Been allocated to another laptop too :(

Blue screen of death can mean anything (never good things though :( ): it basically indicates a low-level error has occurred.

Nell, did you try running Kaspersky in DOS mode? If you're still running it from within Windows, it sounds like K is trying to change/delete/quarantine a file that it thinks is infected, but that file has been locked or is being used by Windows itself. Running in DOS eliminates this problem.

I've never used K but this is the kind of thing I mean: http://www.techmixer.com/kaspersky-rescue-disk-load-kaspersky-antivirus-2009-using-dos/

I'm on another laptop now, I am sure the I.T guy that comes round tomorrow will try this. It wasn't just a blue screen, it had loads of white code on it too.

Like this? -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Windows_XP_BSOD.png

That's known as a blue screen of death, or BSOD. The writing is just some core dump or stack information that you can sometimes use to figure out what went wrong. It's the computer's last gasp before it gives up.

Edit: beaten by tbourner! :)

Ah, that's not soo good.. Will restrict the jokes a bit now incase Charlotte tells me off again.

If you're not in a hurry I could take a look, but I'm not exactly local.

What OS are you currently running as I would be very very tempted to just dump a copy of Windows 7 on the laptop.

After backing up the user files first..

How much data is on there that you don't want to loose?

"A virus"

"A Trojan"

"Some messages"

"Windows popping up"

All very helpful info when trying to give specific help to things, I stand by my earlier comment, kill it with fire.... or post specific information about the actual problem as it appears in the logs and on screen and then we might be able to help more.

Vague info generates vague answers.

It's good to see people not having a clue what they are talking about dishing out advice and making the situation much worse than it was... ;)

I know people are trying to help, but giving bad advice is often worse than giving no advice at all. If Kaspersky didn't pick it up then it was almost certainly not a virus and the infection could have been probably been removed with a few simple tools (like the ones I listed earlier) and got the PC back to how it was.

I believe it's Vista Home Premium, I'm not really bothered about losing the stuff on there, it's only a bit of music and all the pictures are hosted elsewhere anyway. I just don't want to have to get a new Laptop, it would be my 3rd in 2 years lol.

As I am sure you can tell, I am not at all knowledgeable on this, and can only repeat what I see and read, I haven't looked at any of the reports of the Trojans that were successfully deleted as I thought they would perhaps be irrelevant, every time it found the Trogan that I believe is causing the problem, the Laptop would shut down completely. Perhaps if you can tell me which specific information I need to be posting I will try and do so, although I don't think I should turn that laptop back on at the moment, I was just going to leave it for I.T guy tomorrow.
