Getting rid of a Virus

Depends on how far you go back, easy to reinstall though

But it took hours to install I don't fancy doing it again, then having to do the update again which took hours. I would need to go back to yesterday morning before I got the virus, also before I bought Kaspersky though.

Install malwarebytes: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

Install it, update it then run a full system scan and remove anything it finds. Don't format yet... saying you have to re-format your computer when you've had a virus/trojan is utter rubbish lol. If you don't have any anti-spyware software on there either I'd recommend using something like http://www.safer-networking.org/en/ownmirrors1/index.html and performing the same procedure, install, update and fix anything it finds.

As for buying a Mac... that would have been a great idea if you just wanted to empty your wallet for a brand name and a nice shiny logo. I like the MAC OS and I run a virtual PC of Leopard on my PC as well as Windows 7, but the apple hardware is crazily overpriced in my opinion. (ducks from all the mac users throwing fire at me).

If the problem still persists then there are other steps that can be taken before formatting the PC.

System restore won't fix a virus infestation, the same as it won't bring back a document you deleted.

The only way IMO to sort it out is to wipe the HDD and start again. I wouldn't even back anything up as it could all be infected. Take it as lesson learned, do regular backups, install a half decent antivirus and enable extension viewing so that you don't click on something silly again. Oh, and stop using Limewire (insert whatever P2P proggy you use) to download music ;)

Almost forgot, girls can have a wank. They are called "muff wanks".

look beyond. You had a one night stand with an unchecked compressed mp3 file. And you are reaping some frustration. Step back, look. Yes quick "downloads" are fun, but if you do that at least get him to rubber up at a minimum.

As you get older, you will seek fun from more reputable, older and established sources. Eventually we all hope for a "download" for life, a stream of fun and pleasure that we can rely on, even though it may be a bit predictable.

In my experience, System Restore is as useful as a chocolate teapot. By all means try it, you've nothing to lose, but as others have said viruses embed themselves into the operating system's heart. They can be removed, with varying degrees of success (depends on the specific virus, and how malicious the writer was). Personally, I wouldn't fully trust a PC that has been infected with a virus (MS Office doesn't count, but it's a close call :)) and not been re-formatted.

I doubt you'll get much joy by looking at the "startup" programs: most viruses embed themselves into the registry and hide themselves deep within the system32 folder, so they can re-install themselves if you uninstall them.

wow, some sweeping statements here, especially the ones about just blowing the whole thing away and losing all the files on it. That is the very very very last resort.

I would get a local IT geek to give you a hand, most geeks can happily work through the problem. First thing I would do is buy a new portable hard drive, pop that in and back up all the files you need such as music, documents and so on.

I would then restart the machine in safe mode and run Kasper that way if you can.

An IT geek can fix it Im sure, Im sure I could and my geek days are behind me now.

Another one for the annals! :D

Love it when the Boss agrees :D

Dig the yellow pages out. They will either remove it within an hour, or rebuild it for you.

How old is it?

Branners reminded me of something: does Kaspersky come with an option to perform a scan outside of Windows, i.e. in a kind of DOS mode? If so, that's worth a go. Trying to fix Windows problems whilst running Windows can be like trying to re-lay the floor that you're currently standing on: tricky, and prone to failure.

I know my free antivirus software (can't remember the name of the damn thing) comes with an option to do that: called something like "perform scan at next boot".

TBH, I'm sure that it can be removed, but unless you want to take it too a shop (not PC World please) and spend a pretty penny, She'd have to do it her self, but not meaning any offence, Nell doesn't sound like she is confident enough to do this.

Wiping and starting again is a 'safe' method to ensure there are no underlying nasties about.

I alway partition my drive and I don't really have anything important on the C drive, so I can format it if it get's broken.

Thank you to all who has posted advice, I may well call out an I.T guy shortly. I did a System Restore about 30 mintues ago, and when it started up again, no Kaspersky! I finally managed to download it again. No IE pages have come up since the restore thank god, however Kaspersky just alerted me that the Databases are corrupted! I have just started a 3rd party scan, it's one 1% with a massive list of items found  Another thing to mention, is that I am at work connected to a network of 6 PC's, can it affect them?

hence why I suggest a local geek. Shops will mostly charge a fortune, but there are companies that will visit your home and work to fix the problem, some even do a 'no fix no fee' option, and as long as you tell them the fix it to get rid of the virus without losing data they should be able to do it.

Im surprised the geek hoardes on the forum have not offered help. I usually offer up my services if somebody is local or I know them well.

If I was rebuilding the machine I would be in msconfig stopping all the services that look even remotely odd and stopping the startup items, and then trying the AV scan.

the main thing is to back up all your files before hand, so if the machine does go pop you wont lose your music, pictures and other misables.
