Oil leak (with Pics)

Ok, my mechanic has replaced the FMS and this has stopped the leak. (for the meantime anyway). The FMS that came out apparently looked perfectly fine.

Could someone explain to me why if the leak is coming from the FMS the oil pump would also need replacing?

Is it that a knackered oil pump actually causes the FMS to fail?

A basic explanation would be appreciated for us thickos!!

If it keeps failing then the pump could be the problem. Basicaly the pump rotors can ware over time and you get oil pressure on the back of the seal which it is not designed to take.

This either leaks past the seal or can actualy push the seal out.

It could just have been an old tired seal that needed replacing, hopefuly :)

OK in simple terms, wen the oil pump wears, especially on the front spigot area, it allows oil past into the very small void behind the FMS, this area has a small oil drain hole, which as std is not up to the job, the consequence of this is oil builds up at higher RPM and due to pressure overwhelms the oil seal,

The seal will very often look fine, all you will find is that the spring that is in the oil seal is displaced, but believe me it is almost always due to the oil pump.

Thats better, I am useless at puting things in writing. :)

How much does this cost to do roughly as ive been told mine needs doing but i dont really trust what they say so much am thinking of taking it somewhere else!!

EDIT - not oil pump replacement just FMS

You really need to do some reading before you throw money at just getting the seal done and then find that it goes again,

Its not until much further down in the thread that there are some definitive answers, the first part is mostly conjecture.

Ok ladies and gents. A little bit of an update for you. My mechanic has had a butchers and he doesn't think it's the crank seal. He is about 60% it's the oil pump! :help: but can't be sure as he can't run the car without the casing behind pulleys being on. And he can't see where the leak is coming from because it's coming from behind the same casing and it only leaks when the engine is turning over. Catch 22

The oil is spraying (not dripping) out from the back of the oil pressure sensor as shown on the picture.

Anyone any ideas?

I thought the oil was spraying out of the area marked by the arrow. That is way above where the seal is.

How has just replacing the seal repaired where the leak was?

Thanks for that ill have a read!!

I find my leak very odd as i cant see where it comes from but that it only drips when the car is running! I must book it in and get it sorted as its driving me nuts!

Pass! Next Question! :D

Seriously, i don't know. I was at the garage when he ran the car and i saw the oil spaying out from where i showed on the picture.

Got a call from him today saying a new FMS seems to have solved the problem.

Before anyone says he's lying to me, I trust him 100%, he's a family friend.

I will have a better explanation tomorrow when i pick up the supe.

When the FMS leaks oil gets on the pulley and the belt and gets thrown up, trust me if its a bad leak it goes everywhere.

I don't doubt your man, he's obviously stopped the leak. Fingers crossed it's a lasting fix

Yeah I know, I just went by what the OP pointed too in the pic.
