Guigsy
Ok. I have just been chatting with some friends on IRC about driving pet peves and i mentioned something that happened to me a while ago... let me explain. I was coming back from a trip to Norfolk. To go on a boat trip to see some seals, which was very good and highly recomended. Anyway i digress... On the way back i was stuck behind a slow moving lorry on a single carrageway road. Infact there was somewhere between 10 and 15 cars stuck behind it. With me about half way back. There was a strait piece of road with no oncoming, but i considdered myself 2 far back to overtake, It was also dark and i couldnt see the road ahead and i didnt know the road. I looked in my mirror and see a bmw 5 series gunning it down the other side of the road with nowhere to pull in safely up ahead. Now.... when he gets along side... somehow my right foot spazms and i accelerate closing the gap to the car ahead to a few meters. Mr BMW didnt like that, so gave up his overtaking attempt and fell back all the way to where he started because nobody else would let him in. Now after i had finished laughing my ass off i realised i had done something very silly and dangerous. Maybe even illegal. . Its not something that i would usualy do, im quite a passive driver untill someone ticks me off. But what i was wondering is whats your opinion on this? I say Mr BMW was being an absolute arse and deserved to be shown a lesson. My friend in the chatroom said i was being dangerous and a pillock. Its probably all of the above. And im in for some criticism but honestly would you/have you done the same? What would you have done if anything? Edit just thaught i should say im not looking for an argument or people telling me im a dick (i already know this), just a bit of a discussion
matt k
I reckon you are right aboutit being a bit of both, he was being a bell-end for driving like that but you had nothing to gain by doing what you did, this is not a holier than thou speech though as i would have done the same as you
Al Massey
Damn right i would of done the same. He was the idiot putting everyones lives at risk Even if you hadnt speeded up and there wasnt a gap, what would of happened if a car came the other way, Plus i blame the truck driver for not pulling in when there was a load of cars queing up behind him
Animal
I see that kind of pointless, stupid overtake almost every day in Cumbria and I have to say, I've been guilty of closing the gap between me and the car in front if I see someone in my mirrors doing that. I only do it if I can see the other direction is clear and there is no danger of being swerved into. And yes, it's usually Beemers that do it. And works Transit vans. benkei
I'd have done the same. He has nothing to gain other than showing off his car's power in a cock-ish fashoin. Ultimately he'd STILL be stuck behind the lorry, but will have annoyed everyone in the queue by podging infront of them. Back the the end of the queue with you! All BMW drivers are cocks anyway - FACT!
gaz1
it would be the family in the car coming the otherway that would get my sympathy if you closing the gap caused an accident, bloody stupid driving from both of you:(

RobSheffield
Technically you increased the gap behind you However, if you were out in the TT and someone did it, how would you feel? I see it a lot all over the UK on my travels with work, and it annoys me, but i wouldnt take action. Interesting that nobody let him in though! imi
..... i was stuck behind a slow moving lorry on a single carrageway road. Infact there was somewhere between 10 and 15 cars stuck behind it. how many cars behind this slow lorry? Why were drivers not overtaking this lorry when it was safe to do so, so bloody annoying this is (as I have experienced this situation 1st hand) I would have done exactly the same as the BMW driver, only difference is that I would have tucked my car either behind you or in front of you or simply rammed you off the road for putting my life in danger..... If you did what the BMW driver did then you would put your own life in danger and everyone else on the same road as you! If someone tried to ram me off the road like that to get in i would make sure he couldnt drive again

So you would have overtaken at night when you cant see a space to pull in and dont know where the road goes up infront and then when you realised you cant make it barge your way into people who are patiently waiting? AlexM
So essentially 10-15 cars were tailgating each other, plus not overtaking a slow lorry. Someone at the back got frustrated and attempted to make some progress (he may have known the road better than you), and you shut any gap so he was dangerously left hanging on the wrong side of the road? I would have backed off and let him in, there should be enough space between each car for someone to pull in anyway.
Lbm
It's an honest post. I guess you'd feel slightly lousy if your "squeezing him out" routine ended up getting people killed...Hang on, he had a Bmw you say...? On a similar note, I do find myself slightly accelerating in the outside lane of the motorway, if I see some knobhead doing some blatant under taking and then trying to cut back in, infront of me...So yes, sometimes I'm a squeezer (and perhaps I've been the squeezee too)
Guigsy
It was dark yet you knew it was a 5 series. How? because it was 3 foot away infront of me trying to get 7 foot of metal into 4 foot of space edit. it was probably more like 7 foot of space. but still... RedM
because it was 3 foot away infront of me trying to get 7 foot of metal into 4 foot of space You should have made it clear that he passed you. How much else has been left open to interpretation?
Al Massey
I would have backed off and let him in, there should be enough space between each car for someone to pull in anyway. The space isnt there so people that overtake have a place to pull into
Guigsy
he hadnt passed me completely. his rear end was about where my door was untill i started being a cock. For the record. nobody in the que as far as i could tell were tailgating. they were leaving adaquate space for following in trafic.
AlexM
The space isnt there so people that overtake have a place to pull into What space is it you're talking about? From what I just read nobody in those cars was able to drive safely.

Few weeks ago on the way to Manchester through back roads I pulled hard to close the GAP and then applied my brakes to let the guy in... this was a sign to show that I am an Alpha male, but because my girlfriend has long nails and thinks Audi A3's are cute I let him in! Normally I do let them in and I am sure you do... you shouldn't feel no guilt... your friend is only jelous that his £50k M3 can't keep up with you! Lbm
Oh yeah i do that all the time...in my company car Its usually an audi Then there's taking it to the next level. This is where you recognise what's occurring, but it's too late as he's already nipped past, but you will & will and shout at the drivers in front of yourself not to let him in - at any cost. Usually some old bint in a Yaris does and everybody's good work gets undone
