Al Massey
Is anyone on here using Infared on the PS3? Ive been trying to understand what most of the AV forums are going on about by using infared to bluetooth devices and im not sure which one to try. So i was wondering if anyone on here has used anything commercially or made their own? cheers
martini
The PS3 doesn't have infrared! It only has Bluetooth mate, which is much better - so use that. I use a Sony PS3 BT remote...
DaveK
You can buy a £20 remote from Comet with a dongle, and learn the codes with your normal remote. I've done this and it works very well - but as with most dongle solutions you can't power the PS3 on or off. The ones that power the PS3 on / off are more expensive and a bit harder to get hold of. Depends how important that is to you.

I know the PS3 doesnt have infared. Thats why i said infared to bluetooth devices. Which uses an infared remote to send a signal to an infared reciever that converts the signal to bluetooth to control the PS3, like switching it on and off( even tho as far as i know the PS3 doesnt power the USB ports when off), changing tracks etc Its so i can use my remote to watch Blu-Ray films

I have it and you can control everything. It's awesome and BT is so much better than IR. And no, it doesn't power USB ports when off. Al Massey
I assume you saw my earlier post about the dongle remote you can get from Comet / Currys? Yeah, is it any good? I have seen some reviews of various dongles were ok. Just a shame i cant turn the PS3 on and off
DaveK
Yeah, is it any good? I've had no problems with it at all. Works very well. I should add that my remote setup is a little non-standard and I have an IR emitter attached to the dongle itself so it's 100% reliable. I'm sure it would work fine just from the remote though. And why? if you dont mind me asking

DaveK
What do you mean? How have you modyfied it? And why? if you dont mind me asking I've not modified it - I just have a fairly complicated remote control setup. All of my kit (except the television obviously) is in the cupboard under the stairs - PS3, Sky HD, surround amp, hi-fi amp etc. My remote is a TSU9600 and I use an RFX9600 extender to allow me to control the kit in the cupboard. The TSU talks to a wireless router via wi-fi - the RFX has an ethernet connection. Some of my stuff I don't use IR for anyway - TV and surround amp are controlled using RS232. Hi-fi streams from a PC upstairs, running Squeezecenter and controlled via wi-fi. Anything that does use IR (sky HD, hi-fi amp and PS3) is controlled by running an IR emitter from the RFX9600 to the IR receiver for the device. So for the PS3, the IR emitter is simply attached to the end of the dongle. It just means it's a bit like sitting with your remote touching the dongle when you press the button. But obviously that's not necessary - as long as you have line of sight you shouldn't have any problem.

DaveK
upgrade to the Logitech Harmony 1100 or get the cheap one I have but why not just get the offical sony remote I'm not sure everybody would agree the harmony is an upgrade from the 9800i. And the harmony is essentially just a learning remote anyway - the 9800i should also be able to learn codes, so if the harmony can control a dongle I'd expect the 9800i to be able to as well. Al Massey
upgrade to the Logitech Harmony 1100 or get the cheap one I have but why not just get the offical sony remote Why it will be useless, the harmony wont control bluetooth, so i wont be able to control the PS3. The official sony remote uses bluetooth only I want to control it by infared, By turning it on and off, thats why i originally asked about infared to bluetooth devices
